    With Anticipation Stakes Picks 2021

The two-year-old turf route division is just beginning to take shape. Closing week at Saratoga features the first graded two-year-old route race of the year, the With Anticipation Stakes (G3).

The race is scheduled for Wednesday, September 1 at the Spa, and a field of seven two-year-olds will line up for their shot at a $150,000 purse and a place at the top of the juvenile turf route division leading into the autumn.

These are the betting odds on the With Anticipation via SportsInteraction (SIA):

    Limited Liability

    Portfolio Company

    Gooch Go Bragh

    Ready to March

Before getting your bet down on the race, take some time to get to know the field. Knowing both the favorites and the longshots will help you make the best decision on who to play come race day!

    With Anticipation Favorites

    Limited Liability (2.40)

Limited Liability debuted over the same course and distance as the With Anticipation, and his debut was one of the most impressive maiden-breakers of the Saratoga season. Settled toward the rear early, he swung out into the lane, gobbled up ground in upper stretch, and soared clear to win by two and a quarter lengths.

That victory was particularly impressive because the pace in front of him was not truly torrid: it wasn’t slow, but it wasn’t extremely fast, either. With several horses in here who have shown speed, even sprint speed, Limited Liability could get a very nice setup again for trainer Shug McGaughey, whose maiden winners tend to run very well right back.

    Portfolio Company (2.80)

He comes into the With Anticipation with just one start so far, a stalk-and-pounce victory over the same course and distance as the With Anticipation. The local form and the tactical speed are positives, though he was rank early and the race did not come back as fast as some of the races that his competitors have run.

Portfolio Company is trained by Chad Brown, who has already won this race twice. He is an excellent two-year-old trainer and an excellent turf trainer, with charges including 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) winner Structor and 2019 Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar, an older horse who built his resume going two turns on the lawn. However, Chad Brown’s horses always get bet heavily, so be careful not to take an underlay.

    Gooch Go Bragh (5.00)

Though this Todd Pletcher trainee is still a maiden, he ran well over this course and distance on debut August 7. Well off the pace early, he passed all but the winner, who was racing on or near the lead all along. And, he did so in a fast enough fashion to not be outclassed here.

Though Gooch Go Bragh loses his debut rider Irad Ortiz to Portfolio Company, he does get Luis Saez in the irons. Saez has not only been doing well recently with Pletcher, but he has been among the hottest-riding jockeys in the country all year long. Saez also has a tendency to be aggressive, something that could help this horse be more tactical early.

    Coinage (7.00)

Coinage is one of the more experienced horses in this race, with three races already, including one against winners. He has won one of his three starts, a seven-and-three-quarters-length romp against New York-bred maidens on June 17 at Belmont. However, now he faces open company for the first time, goes a route for the first time, and tries turf for the first time.

His tactical speed is a plus. However, how much Coinage will want either turf or a route is a question. The Tapit on top is an excellent sign; his dam Bar of Gold was a G1-winning sprinter, but even she is by Medaglia d’Oro out of a Grade 3-winning turf miler, so it’s possible.

    With Anticipation Longshots

    Kavod (16.00)

Kavod is the most experienced runner in the field, with four starts so far. Like Coinage, every one of Kavod’s starts has come at one turn on dirt. All four of them have had him come from midpack or further back, though stretching out to a route there is some chance he will be able to sit a little bit closer early.

Kavod’s pedigree gives him every chance to want to stretch out to a route, something that makes him the most interesting longshot horse. His sire Lea was a graded stakes-quality horse on both turf and dirt, and his dam Weekend Connection is a Pulpit mare who has produced three turf winners. Specifically, her foals include two who are stakes-placed going two turns on grass as juveniles.

    Silipo (16.00)

Silipo has raced just once and has the class to find in this field. His current connections claimed him for $40,000 out of a debut maiden victory at Saratoga, and run him back in this confident spot. He pressed the pace before clearing off in the lane that day; expect him to be on or near the lead this time since he stretches to a route for the first time.

The switch to turf might work; Candy Ride is as versatile as a sire gets, and Silipo’s half-sister Lisa’s Legacy was a debut maiden winner in a turf dash at age two. However, two turns at this point in her career may be asking a lot.

    Ready to March (31.00)

Ready to March led at every call in his debut. However, that debut came on August 23, just nine days before this race, so he will come in on short rest. That debut also came at Finger Lakes, a racetrack with a significantly less classy company than Saratoga. A victory would be a surprise, though perhaps he is entered to make a bit of pace for his stablemate, the late-running Kavod.
