Golf US Masters Picks: Contenders and Longshots Worth Betting

After a year behind closed doors, the 2021 Masters Tournament is back in the open. There will be a limited amount of spectators in the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia as golf’s best return to claim the iconic green jacket. Our Golf US Masters picks features a look at the usual favourites plus a handful of longshots worth betting.

The 2021 Masters “returns” and will be back outdoors from April 8 to 11. The tournament will have a par of 72 over 7,475 yards. Due to the COVID restrictions, the traditional Par-3 contest will not be held. The first of the four majors will continue to feature the smallest field of competitors ranging from 90 to 100 with no alternates.

Here are the 2021 Masters odds per the top online sportsbooks:

The 2021 Masters: This Year’s Field

As of today, there are 87 players that have earned their spot in the tournament. Among them is the favourite, world number one Dustin Johnson (9.00), who qualified as the previous winner of the tournament in 2020. Other previous Masters winners to be in the field are Patrick Reed (34.00) from 2018 and Sergio Garcia (51.00) from 2017.

The most recent champions from the other three majors will also be in the running including Bryson DeChambeau (12.00) of the US Open, Shane Lowry (101.00) of The Open, and Collin Morikawa (21.00) of the PGA Championship.

Other household names to be competing are Rory McIlroy (15.00) who recently won The Players Championship this month, former world no. one Jon Rahm (13.00), and three-time Masters winner and all-time great Phil Mickelson (101.00) (all odds via Bodog).

2021 US Masters: Contenders and Longshots Worth Betting

But as with every tournament, major or not, a talented field gets whittled down pretty quickly. Even the best golfers can fall behind early and relative unknowns rise to the top. We’ll try to narrow down a handful of golfers to keep an eye on including three contenders plus two dark horses:

Dustin Johnson (9.00)

Johnson dominated last year’s tournament and set a 72-hole record with a score of 268, 20-under par. Of course, he’s the favourite as he’s also been the most consistent golfer in the last two years and is currently third with total winnings with just 14 events in his pocket.

The 36-year-old has carried himself with his renowned driving, but it’s cool composure that gets him through the big events. He has finished in the top ten in five of the last seven majors and has made the cut in seven of the last eleven. As far as “chalk” goes, DJ can’t be missed.

Jon Rahm (13.00)

The Spaniard has yet to win a major yet he’s also been one of golf’s most consistent players. Rahm has been improving in the last few seasons. Most notably, he’s improved his ranking in strokes gained in putting in the last two seasons when he’s been average in that department.

The 26-year-old has made 19 consecutive cuts including the last five majors. He’s also finished in the top ten five times since 2018. Most importantly, he’s finished in the top ten in the Masters since 2018. He is on the cusp and the 2021 Masters could be his breakthrough.

Patrick Cantlay (23.00)

The Californian is one name to keep an eye on despite only have one top-ten finish in this tournament (2019). Cantley has three PGA Tour wins with his most recent being the Zozo Championship. He’s also made ten straight cuts in the four majors and finished third in the 2019 PGA Championship.

The prodigious amateur golfer has flashed plenty of potential in recent tournaments and even beat both Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm. But he’s quickly gaining steam among betting circles so if you like him as an underdog, now might be a good time to bet him while you’re getting this return.

Sergio Garcia (51.00)

The 2017 winner is a sneaky dark horse in this tournament. His inconsistent putting has continued to cost him and he’s yet to prove he’s still among the elite following several cuts to almost every major since he won the green jacket.

But Garcia is on a roll this season and is second only to DeChambeau in strokes gained. If momentum means anything, Garcia could once again put on a championship-worthy performance this year. At these odds, it’s worth considering.

Si Woo Kim (126.00)

The Korean sensation exploded into the mainstream when he became the youngest player to win the Players Championship at just 21. He has won three PGA Tour titles with his latest being the 2021 American Express in the desert. Kim has been inconsistent in the majors but has been a constant presence in the Masters.

He has made three consecutive cuts beginning in 2018 but has yet to finish in the top ten. As a young player brimming with potential, Kim has shown he can hang in Augusta and at these odds, he’s worth a glimpse.
