UFC 237 – Every Rose Has Her Thorn
The Ultimate Fighting Championship travels to Brazil for UFC 237, where several Brazilian fighters will square off in front of their home crowd. The co-main event on May 11th will feature Namajunas vs. Andrade and Silva vs. Cannonier. This excellent card includes José Aldo and Thiago Alves, two of the most popular fighters in Brazil. UFC 237 odds don’t favor the Brazilians, but fighting in their home country should provide enough of a boost to create upset results.
Rose Namajunas -105 vs. Jéssica Andrade -125
Rose is one of the most famous women’s MMA fighters in the world, overcoming a ton of adversity to become the UFC odds favorite for the main event – according to most sports betting sites. She’ll fight against a more experienced opponent in Jéssica Andrade.
Andrade gets another opportunity to win the strawweight belt after losing to Joanna Jędrzejczyk during UFC 211. Jéssica is considered one of the biggest brutes in the division, relying on strength and aggression to overwhelm her opponents.
Rose isn’t the type of fighter who becomes easily overwhelmed. Namajunas scored the upset of the year in 2017 with her first-round KO of Jędrzejczyk. Rose then defended her belt against Joanna again, proving that her win wasn’t a fluke. Expect another outstanding performance from Rose.
Pick – Rose Namajunas -105
Jared Cannonier -160 vs. Anderson Silva +130
It’s tough to watch legends fade in front of your eyes, especially when they’re attempting to regain past glory. Few fighters have the pedigree and respect earned throughout the amazing career of Anderson Silva. Unfortunately for Anderson, a horrific snapped shinbone drained the energy from his historic successes.
Silva will square off against Jared Cannonier, a talented but inexperienced pugilist nicknamed “The Killa Gorilla”. At the age of 35, Cannonier only has 15 MMA bouts under his belt since 2011, creating a big gap in experience.
Some worried that Israel Adesanya would knock Silva’s block off, but Anderson fought better than most expected, holding off a younger and more explosive Adesanya. Silva didn’t win, but he showed that he’s still capable of going toe-to-toe with anyone. Expect one more signature win from Silva.
Pick – Anderson Silva +130
José Aldo -145 vs. Alexander Volkanovski +115
Calling these two warriors “featherweights” is a misnomer. Both of these fighters hit like a truck, obliterating their competition on a regular basis. UFC Vegas odds list Aldo as a moderate favorite, but that might be based on his popularity, especially among Brazilian fans of MMA.
Aldo knows what it takes to be a champion, defending his belt successfully on ten consecutive occasions before Conor McGregor snatched the title with a lucky punch. Before that unfortunate event, Aldo lost a single fight in 26 attempts. After Conor, José lost twice to Max Holloway, relinquishing the featherweight belt.
Alexander’s an Australian champion on a 16 fight win streak, including a Fight of the Night TKO victory over Chad Mendes. Mendes was a stepping stone for Aldo and McGregor in the division, which makes Volkanovski’s sound defeat of Chad an outstanding portent. Expect a minor upset in this bout.
Pick - Alexander Volkanovski +115
Thiago Alves -115 vs. Laureano Staropoli -115
UFC betting odds don’t get any closer than this. Most sportsbooks list Thiago Alves and Laureano Staropoli with equal probabilities to pull off a victory in the octagon. Nationalistic undertones of this match pit the Brazilian Alves against the Argentinian Staropoli, both of whom will be cheered on by fellow countrymen.
Since this bout’s taking place in Brazil, the experienced Alves should draw extra energy from the Brazilian crowd. However, he hasn’t been the same since losing an opportunity to lift the welterweight belt against GSP a decade ago. Thiago has lost seven of 13 bouts as he attempted to rise back up the ranks.
Laureano will have his work cut out for him. Alves will be the first experienced UFC fighter that Staropoli faces in the octagon. However, given Thiago’s lengthy losing trend, selecting Laureano appears to be the better choice for punters.
Pick – Laureano Staropoli -115
Francisco Trinaldo +130 vs. Diego Ferreira -160
Yet another old-time Brazilian fighter enters the ring in UFC 237, as Francisco Trinaldo looks for his second consecutive victory in his home country. He’s lost two of his last four bouts after winning seven in a row.
Trinaldo’s opponent will be fellow Brazilian Diego Ferreira, who will be strongly favored to win this bout. Ferreira has a 6-2 record since focusing his efforts on UFC competitions, including four consecutive wins.
Ferreira has a significant reach advantage against Trinaldo, which will force Francisco to take risks to land strikes and grapples. It’s tough for older fighters to overcome this type of disadvantage, making Diego the smart pick.
Pick – Diego Ferreira -160
