UFC 232 – Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson II
UFC 232 Main Card
Jon “Bones” Jones and Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson headline UFC 232, which will feature not one but two title bouts on December 29th at T-Mobile Arena in Nevada. In a main card filled with excellent bouts, sports betting sites consider Jones as the biggest favorite of the night, expected to bear the UFC Light Heavyweight belt at the end of the evening.
UFC Light Heavyweight Championship
Jon Jones (-285) vs. Alexander Gustafsson (+225)
The main event of UFC 232 will feature a bone-rattling clash between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. UFC odds suggest that this bout is the biggest mismatch of the main card, despite Gustafsson’s strong performance against Jones the last time they fought.
Jon earned his “Bones” nickname as a lanky high school football player, but the moniker would prove prophetic. Jones is one of deadliest strikers in the history of the sport, launching devastating attacks from unusual angles. He’s also proficient on the mat, even if he hasn’t earned a submission win since his 2012 victory over Vitor Belfort in Toronto.
Alex has the reach and strength to make things uncomfortable for Jones, as witnessed by their first meeting, which ended in a draw. However, Gustafsson’s unlikely to achieve a better result after Jones refocused his energy on a stable mixed martial arts lifestyle.
Expect Jones to win another decision over Gustafsson.
UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship
Cris Cyborg (-260) vs. Amanda Nunes (+200)
The co-main event looks to be another mismatch according to MMA odds. Amanda enters the ring as a +200 underdog to Cris Cyborg, current bearer of the belt. Cyborg defended her title against Yana Kunitskaya and Holly Holm after winning the championship from Tonya Evinger via KO.
Nunes is on a roll, winning seven consecutive fights to establish herself as the Bantamweight champ. After defending her belt against Pennington, Shevchenko and Rousey, Amanda will move up a weight class in an attempt to become a multi-division champion.
Cyborg’s only loss was her first MMA appearance in 2005. Since then, she’s ploughed through 20 opponents in a row, not including a no content result due to a failed drug test.
Cris will leverage this weight and experience advantage into a successful title defense against Nunes.
UFC Men’s Welterweight
Carlos Condit (+160) vs. Michael Chiesa (-200)
Both fighters enter this bout on losing streaks. Condit’s lost four in a row and Chiesa’s dropped his last two fights. Carlos has had difficulty defending against strong grapplers while Michael’s earned 10 of his 14 victories via submission.
Chiesa should be able to stop Condit with a submission win.
UFC Men’s Light Heavyweight
Ilir Latifi (-160) vs. Corey Anderson (+130)
Latifi is an experienced MMA practitioner who responded to a KO loss against Ryan Bader in 2016 with two consecutive wins. He’ll face the rangy Corey Anderson, an elusive target who will aim to frustrate Ilir by keeping the Albanian-Swede at a distance.
Anderson’s a good candidate for an upset during UFC 232 – look for Corey to win by decision.
UFC Men’s Featherweight
Chad Mendes (-155) vs. Alexander Volkanovski (+125)
Mendes continues his quest for glory after losing three title fights against Aldo and McGregor, squaring off against Volkanovski. Alexander is relatively new to the UFC, winning all five appearances under Dana White’s umbrella. Winner of 15 consecutive fights, mostly with KO punches, Volkanovski has a solid shot at defeating one of the UFC’s most popular pugilists.
Alex will raise his UFC profile with a resounding win over Mendes.
