The 2021 Players Championship: What to Expect

The Players Championship returns after being cancelled last year due to you know what. It still takes place in the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. As of 2020, the winner receives $2.7 million and 80 points towards their world ranking.

The winner also essentially guarantees their place in the four majors: the US Open, PGA Championship, Masters Tournament, and The Open Championship. The field will consist of 144 players consisting of majors champions of the last five years, the top 125 from the FedEx Cup points list and the winners of the PGA Tour events since the last Players among others.

The Players feature two of the toughest finishing holes in golf, the TPC Sawgrass Island Green on 17 and the Par 4 18th hole. There's a reason no golfer outside of Tiger Woods has won this tournament more than once despite being played on the same course every year.

The Players Championship Picks: The Main Contenders

With over 20 golfers on the board, here are the five main contenders you'll need to be familiar with. As with golf, the winner could emerge out of nowhere but we're sure most of these contenders will make an impact in some way:

Dustin Johnson (11.00)

The world number one enters the tournament as the odds-on favourite despite never having won. Johnson's best result was in 2019 where he finished tied for fifth. But he has been on a roll lately having won the 2020 Masters Tournament with a record finish: 268 and 20-under-par. He's finished in the top three for all three tournaments he's played in for the 2020-21 tour.

Johnson has been the world number one for over a hundred weeks. That spells consistency. Although he's having a tough go at the WGC-Mexico Championship, he will remain a favourite heading to this tournament. Heck, he'll be a favourite for almost every tournament.

Rory McIlroy (13.00)

You can argue that Johnson may be the more consistent golfer but McIlroy has the higher ceiling. The Irishman is currently ranked eighth and finished fourth in the scoring rank in 2020. He is the defending champion of the Players Championship after edging Jim Furyk.

McIlroy hasn't been having the best year so far ranking 27th among the money leaders and in eight events. However, the 31-year-old remains a popular bet. He's the favourite to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational despite never having won it at all. Fans are just enamoured by the charismatic "Wee-Mac."

Jon Rahm (17.00)

The Spaniard was a former world number one if but briefly. Rahm has been hanging around the favourites club entering tournaments due to coming oh-so-close in several outings. He finished in the top four for the Masters and PGA Championship in 2018 and tied for third in the US Open in 2019. But he's not finished in the Players' top ten.

Rahm is steadily improving with each Players outing. He finished in the top 12 in 2019 after coming in at 63 in 2018 and 72 in 2017. He is a potential winner but his appeal is definitely a distant third to Johnson and McIlroy.

Brooks Koepka (19.00)

Another who flirted with world number one, Koepka is a four-time majors winner having won the PGA Championship and US Open back-to-back. He's having a solid 2021 having won the Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale on a comeback after trailing by five shots.

Koepka has had mixed results with the Players finishing 56th in 2019 and just barely missing the top ten in 2018. He has yet to recapture his form after suffering a knee injury. The fact he's one of the favourites shows just how much promise he still holds.

Xander Schauffele (19.00)

The 27-year-old looks to finally win one after coming so close in several tournaments. Schauffele finished second in the Open in 2018, in the Masters in 2019, and The Players in 2018. He missed the cut in 2019 but went on a tear in 2020 finishing in the top-five in scoring rank.

The world number five is third among the money leaders behind Johnson and Viktor Hovland. Schauffele is undoubtedly a rising star in the world of gold and winning the Players will further establish that.
