2021 Oscars Odds: Nomadland To Win Best Picture

Each year, there is always a favourite to bring home the night’s biggest honour: the Best Picture award. Nomadland is a sizable favourite here at 1.27. The film follows Fern played by the beloved Frances McDormand who decides to become a nomad and travel across America after her husband dies and the industry closes down.

The film premiered on September 11, 2020, at the Venice Film Festival and won the Golden Lion. Since then, it’s been widely praised and has brought home a plethora of awards including the People’s Choice Award from the Toronto International Film Festival and the Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes.

Nomadland is also slated for six Academy Awards and Chloe Zhao, the film’s director, and screenwriter is heavily favoured to win both categories. It’s “in the bag” as they say, although an upset is still possible as we’ve seen in the past.

In 2017, Moonlight upset La La Land in one of the most memorable Best Picture upsets for several reasons. 2004 and 2005 also saw consecutive upsets when Million Dollar Baby and Crash beat out The Aviator and Brokeback Mountain to everyone’s surprise. And perhaps the biggest upset in the last 30 years came when Mel Gibson’s Braveheart stunned Apollo 13 in 1995.

It’s possible although improbable that and pulls the rug from under Nomadland. Both films drew rave reviews and won several awards in their own right. Most notably, the two are focused on people of colour, which is a theme for this year’s Oscars.

The 2021 Oscars Favorites: An Historic Night For People of Colour

Whether it’s an abashedly obvious response to last year’s #OscarsSoWhite protest or not, this year’s slate leans towards people of colour. Several categories are heavily favoured to go in that direction so betting elsewhere may be a fool’s errand.

But never say never as upsets still happen as we look at the likely winners for the major awards (odds via SportsInteraction (SIA)):

Best Actor: Chadwick Boseman (1.02)

Rest in peace to the great Chadwick Boseman. He is the runaway favourite to posthumously win this coveted award for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black BottomBoseman shined as Levee Green, a cocky trumpeter across Viola Davis’s titular character.

While Davis put on an awe-inspiring performance, Boseman was the captivating force that drew unanimous rave reviews. His performance also won the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards and the Golden Globe Awards all but guaranteeing he’ll win this one.

Best Actress: Andra Day (7.28)

The only underdog on our list here, Andra Day will be going against heavyweights like Davis (2.53), Carey Mulligan (2.30), and McDormand (4.05). Day plays Billie Holiday, the subject of the controversial The United States vs. Billie Holiday.

While the film was less than a slamdunk, Day’s performance was widely praised and even earned her the win in the Golden Globes for the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama category. Either she or Davis will be going home with the Oscars but at 7-1 odds, we like Day.

Best Director: Chloe Zhao (1.11)

Another heavy favourite, Zhao has been all but crowned as this year’s Best Director for her work in Nomadland. The Chinese filmmaker has long been a darling in the independent scene and she’s due to get a breakout win here.

Zhao has already won at the BAFTA and the Golden Globes along with Nomadland being the near-unanimous choice as this year’s best film. She’ll continue to make history and become the first Asian woman to win this prestigious award and just the third Asian to win following Ang Lee and last year’s winner, Bong Joon-ho.

Best Supporting Actor: Daniel Kaluuya (1.08)

Wakanda is winning big tonight as Boseman’s Black Panther co-star is slated to run away with this award for his performance as Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah. Kaluuya practically swept the award from BAFTA to the Golden Globes to SAG and should win this one to no one’s surprise.
