Super Bowl Preview: Why Patriots Could Miss Second Straight Title

Super Bowl Preview: Why Patriots Could Miss Second Straight Title

New England Patriots (-200) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (+170)

National Football League quarterbacks generally don’t play into their 40s. Tom Brady, on the other hand, is in a league of his own. In search of his sixth Super Bowl ring, even oddsmakers like Brady’s chances of winning another NFL championship.

Heading into Super Bowl 52 against the Philadelphia Eagles, the defending champion Patriots opened as 6-point favourites to capture a second consecutive crown. That line moved all so slightly as New England is now favoured by 5 points in the Super Bowl, which is on Feb. 4 in Minnesota. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium and can be viewed on NBC.

“We really don’t know very much about Philadelphia,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick told WHDH News in Boston. “They’re obviously an outstanding team and we have a lot of work to do. We have a lot of ground that we need to cover, so we’re at it hard trying to catch up.”

Let’s break down some of the top Super Bowl Sunday odds and betting lines for the New England Patriots. Odds are courtesy of

    Moneyline (-200)

The Patriots head into the Super Bowl as -200 favourites after going 9-1 straight up in their last 10 games. In seven Super Bowl appearances, Brady has 15 touchdowns passes, 5 interceptions and a 95.3 QB rating. However, he is trying to also accomplish what no other NFL quarterback has done before if the Patriots are able to defeat the Eagles in the Super Bowl.

With a victory, Brady can be the first QB to lead the league in passing yards and win the Vince Lombardi Trophy in the same season. The key for the Patriots will be taking an early lead rather than letting the Eagles get in front and being forced to play catch-up.

    Point Spread (-5)

For once, bettors won’t be faced with an insurmountable point spread line when putting their money down on the Patriots. Sports Interaction has the Pats as 5-point favourites heading into Super Bowl Sunday. New England posted an impressive 12-6 record against the spread, but it is important to note that the defending champions are also 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games.

The problem for the Patriots is that the Eagles have been equally impressive against the spread this season — posting an identical 12-6 record ATS.

Expect this Super Bowl to be a lot closer than many football experts expect. It will be hard for the Pats to cover — especially if tight end Rob Gronkowski is out of the lineup.

    New England to Score First

The Patriots can’t afford to fall early in the game. This Philadelphia Eagles team is the real deal — with or without starting quarterback Carson Wentz. Will the Patriots be able to overcome its tough start in the AFC Championship and grab the first touchdown of the Super Bowl?

If so, it will pay out at +145. If you haven’t yet, put this bet in for the Super Bowl while the odds are still available on Sports Interaction. Another enticing wager is putting your money down on the Patriots kicking a field goal to open the scoring, which is paying out at +325.

Brady has had his success and while the Patriots are frontrunners to win the Super Bowl for a second straight year, Philadelphia’s stingy defense will prevail in the end, dethroning the champs to win the Super Bowl crown.

Super Bowl Prediction: Philadelphia Eagles (+170, +5)
