Super Bowl Preview: Can Eagles Get Revenge on Patriots?

Super Bowl Preview: Can Eagles Get Revenge on Patriots?

Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl Odds: +170, +5

There was a huge gasp for air in the Philadelphia Eagles' organization when the club lost their starting quarterback, Carson Wentz, to a season-ending knee injury late in the regular season. The Eagles were comfortably sitting first in the NFC East Division when Wentz went down with the injury, leaving many to believe Philadelphia’s championship aspirations were all but over. With Super Bowl 52 fast approaching, the Eagles are now preparing to face the defending champion New England Patriots for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Super Bowl odds were released this week, with the Eagles coming in as the expected underdogs at +170, according to Sports Interaction oddsmakers. Coming off a huge NFC Championship victory over the Minnesota Vikings, the Eagles are relishing the role of the underdog heading into the Super Bowl on Feb. 4 in Minnesota.

“I think everybody in the league sort of envies their success to some extent, and rightfully so,”  Eagles head coach Doug Pederson told reporters during his news conference. “They’ve been there, done that many times and that’s something that every team would love to have.”

The Patriots are seeking a sixth Super Bowl championship and second consecutive title. The Eagles have not played the Pats since 2015 when Philly walked away with a 35-28 victory over New England. However, it’s the Pats that own a 4-2 record against the Eagles over their last six games.

Both clubs finished with identical 13-3 records in the regular season and were among the highest scoring teams in the NFL this season. The Patriots scored 458 points — one more than the Eagles. Philadelphia is allowed 295 points — one less than the Patriots. To put it frankly, the Patriots and Eagles are evenly matched at both ends of the field, but it’s experience that is lacking for Philadelphia. New England has been in this position before and Tom Brady — the NFL’s leader in passing yards in 2017 — knows how to deal with the pressure.

Can Wentz’s backup Nick Foles, who has been strong since the sophomore QB went down with the injury, live up to the Super Bowl hype? If Foles’ post-season numbers are any indication, he will match up nicely against Brady in Super Bowl 52. The Eagles’ pivot has a passer rating of 122.1 through two games this post-season, which ranks at the top of the league. He’s also completed 72 of 96 passes for 793 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions heading into the NFL championship game. He will have to be as efficient against Brady and the Patriots should they stand any chance of coming out on top.

    My Team's Next MatchPhiladelphia Eagles

Sports Interaction oddsmakers have set the total points projection at 48.5, but despite both of the clubs being offensive powerhouses this season, bettors should prepare for what will be a tight, low-scoring affair.

As Atlanta learned in last year’s Super Bowl, scoring first doesn’t give you any true advantages, but for the Eagles it still means a lot. Sports Interaction is offering an intriguing +275 line if the Eagles score the game’s first touchdown and +350 they’ll kick a field goal to open the scoring. New England got off to a slow start in the AFC Championship, so it is not a bad idea to put your money on the Eagles to get off to the same hot start in the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia can be up by 2 or 3 touchdowns, but they will have to do what other clubs have failed to do in the past — hold on to the lead and lock down the victory. The Eagles are well coaches, top to bottom and it should be enough to dethrone the champions.
