The final workouts and practises are in the books for the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, who will face off in the Super Bowl on Sunday in Minnesota. The Pats come in as 4½ point favourites against an Eagles team that has performed so well against the spread this season and against New England in particular. Can the Pats overcome their ATS struggles against the Eagles? We break it down in our Super Bowl Point Spread Preview.

Eagles @ Patriots

If the New England Patriots haven’t already proved to be the greatest dynasty in NFL history, the franchise can certainly add that stamp on Sunday. Tom Brady and the Patriots will shoot for a second straight Super Bowl win and sixth overall title when they take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday’s championship game in Minnesota. Kickoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. and the game can be watched on NBC.

The encouraging news for the Patriots, who go into the Super Bowl as -180 favourites, is that superstar tight end and touchdown machine Rob Gronkowski has been cleared to play against the Eagles.

“One more opportunity to play the game I love to play,” Gronkowski told reporters in his first media appearance heading into the Super Bowl. “I knew I was going to be playing the whole time, but I didn’t want to jump into it right away.”

There was some concern that the Patriots, who enter action on Sunday as the -180 favourites, would be without their most dynamic pass-catcher when New England takes on Philadelphia in the Super Bowl.

spread

Gronkowski’s return didn’t make much of a change when it comes to the point spread line, which is set at -4.5 in favour of the Patriots.

The Eagles held their final practice before the Super Bowl on Friday and head coach Doug Pederson preached to his players to take in every moment during the final.

“These opportunities, as you know, don’t come around every year,” Peterson told reporters. “Also, make sure just to reflect on this season, reflect on the journey that got us here. But just play for one another, have fun and enjoy it.”

Both New England and Philadelphia have been excellent against the spread this season, posting identical 12-6 ATS records heading into Super Bowl Sunday. The Eagles are 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games and the club holds a 7-2 ATS record in its last 9 games when playing New England. Both of those stats are giving bettors more confidence to put their money on the Eagles, who are making their first Super Bowl appearance since 2005 when they lost to the Patriots in the final.

The defending champion Patriots have been equally impressive against the spread this season. New England is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games on home field. However, this game will be played at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota. A problem, right? Not when you’re talking about the Patriots, who are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games. However, it is important to note that the club has a poor track-record against the spread when taking on the Eagles.

With both teams performing so well against the spread this season, what can we expect in Super Bowl 52? Four and a half points is not a daunting mark for the Patriots to cover, but this will be the year of the Eagle, so bettors can expect Philadelphia to fly high and prevail in Super Bowl 52.
