NBA Championship Futures Odds 2019
The Toronto Raptors have emerged as the main contenders against the reign of the Golden State Warriors in 2019. NBA futures betting show Golden State as overpowering favorites to win another championship, especially in a weakened western conference. However, the rise of the eastern conference this season will produce a strong challenge from Toronto, the Boston Celtics or the Philadelphia 76ers, all of whom feature the personnel needed to upset the champs.
NBA Championship Favorites
Despite a few puzzling losses, particularly to the Leonard-less Raptors in December, the Golden State Warriors shouldn’t be doubted as extreme favorites to win their third consecutive championship and fourth ring in five years. The Dubs will only strengthen as the year goes on as Boogie Cousins returns from injury. Cousins will have a few months to become accustomed to his role as the third splash brother, creating a new death lineup which the Warriors will leverage to rule pro basketball.
Much to the surprise of many pundits, Kawhi Leonard has fit in extremely well with the Toronto Raptors while rookie bench boss Nick Nurse guides the North to the top of the standings. Kawhi already shows flashes of his form as NBA Finals MVP and Kyle Lowry has increased the intelligence and intensity of his game. Perhaps the most shocking development for Toronto would be Pascal Siakam, who might be the most improved player this season. If the Warriors are injured or disorganized, Toronto has a shot at an upset.
One of the best values for NBA futures might be the Boston Celtics, who seem to struggle in the shadows of expectation. Tatum and Brown are off to a slow start, while Gordon understandably struggles to regain his game. Kyrie get buckets but remains fragile and Al Horford’s a year older. Some believe that injuries gave Boston’s young guns the space to shine during last year’s playoff run, with the balance disrupted this season. Instead, expect the Celtics to build cohesion throughout the campaign, peaking in the playoffs.
NBA Championship Dark Horses
- Houston Rockets +1400
- Los Angeles Lakers +1600
- Philadelphia 76ers +1600
- Milwaukee Bucks +1900
- Oklahoma City Thunder +2100
Sure, the Houston Rockets have James Harden and Chris Paul, but the franchise dismantled one of the best groups of perimeter defenders when they allowed Ariza and Mbah a Moute to leave. This decision will haunt Houston, who were a game away from the NBA Finals.
As expected, LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers weathered an early season storm to emerge as a dark horse contender in the western conference. Will Magic Johnson find help for LeBron before the trade deadline?
On paper, the acquisition of Jimmy Butler should give the Philadelphia 76ers enough of an edge to challenge for a championship. Truth is Philly will go as far as Joel Embiid takes them, and the franchise appears a year or two away from challenging the NBA elite.
Giannis Antetokounmpo continues his mission to rule the NBA as a burgeoning MVP candidate. Coach Mike Budenholzer was a key addition for the Milwaukee Bucks, who don’t have the depth to win this year but will challenge over the next half-decade.
Paul George is having himself an amazing season, but Russell Westbrook’s three-point shooting has taken yet another step back. Russ and Paul are electric, but the Oklahoma City Thunder don’t have enough shooting to win a championship.
NBA Futures Longshots
- Denver Nuggets +4500
- Los Angeles Clippers +5500
- Utah Jazz +6000
- New Orleans Pelicans +6500
- San Antonio Spurs +6500
Coach Mike Malone might not have been good enough for Sacramento, but he’s guided the Denver Nuggets to an outstanding start to the season. If Denver continues playing at this level, the Nuggets will become a much more expensive NBA futures bet over the next couple of months.
Another superbly coached club, the Los Angeles Clippers have outplayed expectations, partly because Doc Rivers doesn’t waste time as a GM anymore. Nonetheless, don’t expect a ring for the Clippers in 2019.
The Utah Jazz appear to have taken a step back this year as Donovan Mitchell struggles to recapture his outstanding 2018 playoff form. Utah doesn’t have enough scoring to beat the heavyweights, even if Mitchell starts splashing again.
Basketball history will show that the New Orleans Pelicans wasted time with Anthony Davis, refusing to give a top-five player the help needed to thrive in the playoffs. Sadly, Davis might not even play in the post season, which will almost certainly trigger his flight.
Coach Gregg Popovich may have finally been dealt a losing hand after the exodus of Kawhi Leonard. The San Antonio Spurs will struggle mightily to make the playoffs, even if DeRozan and Aldridge play well.
NBA Lottery Contenders
Since the NBA features the least parity of all major North American pro sports leagues, winning a championship tends to be out of reach for the majority of franchises. Nearly all NBA champions feature multiple all-stars, a deep bench and smart coaching, a combo few teams possess. Even LeBron James was only able to win a single ring with the Cavaliers, because the Warriors feature a historically great lineup.
Of the following teams, only the Portland Trail Blazers feature the personnel to potentially rise out of basketball purgatory. The Indiana Pacers are a solid club, but require another year or two of development to regain a competitive foothold.
- Indiana Pacers +8000
- Portland Trail Blazers +8500
- Charlotte Hornets +9000
- Detroit Pistons +9000
- Memphis Grizzlies +9000
- Dallas Mavericks +10000
- Minnesota Timberwolves +10000
- Washington Wizards +11000
- Miami Heat +13000
- Orlando Magic +15000
- Sacramento Kings +15000
- Brooklyn Nets +30000
- New York Knicks +100000
- Atlanta Hawks +200000
- Chicago Bulls +200000
- Cleveland Cavaliers +200000
- Phoenix Suns +200000
