Chicago Cubs at L.A Dodgers NL Championship Series Predictions
2017 National League Championship Series Betting
The 2017 NLCS is a rematch of the 2016 Championship series that saw the Chicago Cubs beat L.A 4-2 in the series en route to their World Series drought of 108 years. 2017 may have the same two combatants, but the roles are somewhat reversed, as the top seeded Dodgers have been waiting for this matchup for awhile after sweeping away Arizona in the NLDS, while Chicago needed every break they could get in their NLDS win over Washington in the maximum five games.
Last year it was the Cubs who waited for the Dodgers to get through their five-game set in the NLDS, and you've got to wonder if the flip in scenario, and home field advantage - this year the Dodgers have it - will be what helps L.A break their own World Series drought (29 years), as it's L.A who enters the series as heavy favorites to knock off the defending champs.
2017 NLCS Betting Odds - To Win Series
Chicago Cubs (+165) vs. L.A Dodgers (-185) - Odds taken from Bet365
After some major stumbles in August and early September, the L.A Dodgers looked like the team that dominated MLB through the first four months during their sweep of Arizona last round. L.A's deep and talented lineup knocked Diamondbacks pitching all over the yard in the first two games, and their prized deadline acquisition Yu Darvish pitched a gem in the closeout game. Even with some extended rest between rounds, if it's those L.A Dodgers that show up in the NLCS, it will defintely be L.A that moves on to the World Series.
Chicago does have the mental edge going into this series knowing they won this matchup a year ago as it helped catapult them to a world title. This is basically the same Cubs team in 2017 that won it all in 2016, and now that they narrowly got by Washington, they face another team in L.A who's got a long history of playoff failures in recent memory. Pressure to perform can do funny things to dominant teams during October - just ask the Cleveland Indians about that - and it will be interesting to see if a similar thing happens to this L.A squad if Chicago forces them to face some adversity early on in the NLCS.
Who's Got The Edge Overall?
L.A made sure to get their revenge for last year's playoff loss to the Cubs during the regular season as they won the season series with Chicago by a 4-2 margin. That margin of defeat included sweeping Chicago when they came to L.A for a three-game set in late-May, and three of their four wins came via a shutout. Blank a lineup like the Cubs once and some may consider it lucky, but to do it in half the games against them, including consecutive games, has to erase any sort of "mental deficit" the Dodgers might have in regards to last year's playoff loss. The 2017 Dodgers are a much more dominant crew from top to bottom and getting the ultimate revenge would be to win this series and move on to their first World Series since 1988.2017 NLCS Betting Pick: L.A Dodgers (-185)
Just like my ALCS pick, stepping out on the heavy favorite isn't really the flashy pick, and going against the defending champs is a little concerning given how big of an underdog the Cubs are. But while the Dodgers took a big step up in talent, depth, and level of play in 2017 compared to 2016, it can be argued that the Cubs did the exact opposite.
Chicago simply doesn't have the starting pitching from top to bottom to match up with L.A over seven games, and the Dodgers lineup is also much deeper from 1-8 in the order. Combine that with the playoff revenge factor working in L.A's favor we should see Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers make it to the Fall Classic to finally play for a championship.
