NHL Playoff Picks Today: Edmonton Oilers at Anaheim Ducks

NHL Playoff Picks Today: Edmonton Oilers at Anaheim Ducks

Anaheim Ducks vs Edmonton Oilers Game 7

My Team's Next MatchEdmonton Oilers

It's not hard to make a strong argument that the Edmonton Oilers could already be moving on to the Western Conference Finals had it not been for a few highly controversial calls going against them. Blowing a 3-0 lead with under four minutes to play in Game 5 would have crushed a lot of teams in the NHL, but Edmonton used it as fuel and blew the Ducks out of the water (pun intended) with a 7-1 win in Game 6.

Now it's a do-or-die scenario back in Anaheim where the Oilers have plenty of good memories (won Games 1 and 2) but also have to relive the horrors that Game 5 brought. You can argue that the Oilers have dominated play in the games played in Anaheim this entire series and you wouldn't hear much from me. However, on the other side of the coin is the notion that the Ducks have yet to come close to playing their best hockey at home in this series, aside from those final three minutes of regulation in Game 5. That idea can actually be quite scary for Oilers fans because when this Ducks team is rolling - like they did in Game 3 - they are very tough to beat.

Yet, Anaheim also has this dark cloud over their head regarding Game 7's as they've lost the last five Game 7's they've been involved in; all of them coming since 2008.

That means that the core of this squad like Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf have been involved in all of those defeats and they could have some of their own horrific memories creeping into their thoughts should things go bad early on tonight. However, I tend to subscribe to the idea that the Ducks having not played very well at all in this building vs Edmonton is going to be very bad news for this young Oilers team with the bulk of their roster never playing in a Game 7.

All that talk about experience at the beginning of the series will show up in spades here as the Ducks get that Game 7 monkey off their backs. Edmonton still may not want to step foot in this building after how Game 5 ended, and when you combine that with the Ducks long overdue for a dominant home performance, we should see Anaheim moving on.
