NHL Player Props 2021: Quarter-season update

NHL Player Props 2021: Quarter-season update

The NHL player props or the NHL award update focuses on a select group of players that are emerging as contenders. Given how different this season is, plenty of the names are mainly household hockey names although their actual performance - and team success play heavily here.

The Hart Trophy, which determines the "player most valuable to his team" is the most prestigious and is essentially a marker of the NHL's best player for the season. Per usual, Connor McDavid leads everyone as the NHL's golden boy is on a historic scoring tear. But he's not the only one worthy of the honours.

Let's take a look at the Hart Trophy contenders (odds via the top online sportsbooks):

NHL Hart Trophy Props: It's McDavid or Bust

Barring another injury, McDavid is going to capture his second Hart Trophy in four seasons. This could arguably be his third or even fourth had he not been injured and had the Oilers been anything but incompetent.

McDavid is on a scoring tear not seen since the Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky era. We're talking about 30 points in 17 games or 1.76 points a game, which translates to 144 points in an 82-game season. The last player to score at this pace was Lemieux over 25 seasons ago.

And thanks to the NHL's new divisional format, all Edmonton has to do is finish fourth to make the playoffs. This means Edmonton only has to beat Vancouver and Calgary for that final playoff spot.

On McDavid's tail is a slew of other players having phenomenal seasons as well. The Leafs' Auston Matthews has 11 goals in just 14 games. At 0.78 goals per contest that equals 64 goals in a full season and is similar to Ovechkin's Hart-winning 2008 season.

McDavid's teammate Leon Draisaitl is also riding shotgun. His 1.52 points per game aren't far behind McDavid's and he's stayed healthier. If McDavid gets hurt again, Draisaitl will emerge as a co-favourite with Matthews.

NHL Player Props: Favourites, Best Value, and Overrated Picks

Other than the Hart Trophy props, two other NHL player props focus on the other prestigious awards like the Calder and the Vezina to award the top rookie and goaltender, respectively. We look at the favourites and pick two others who are underrated and overrated (odds via Betway):

NHL Calder Trophy Props: the Best Rookie

The Calder Trophy is a surprising award as far as NHL player props go because the pool includes rookies from several draft classes. Thus, many are "surprise" contenders:

Favourite: Kirill Kaprizov (3.00) - speaking of surprises, Kaprizov has emerged as one of Minnesota's key players. The 23-year-old has three goals and nine points in 11 appearances. Kaprizov was drafted in 2015 in the fifth round. If he keeps up this scoring pace, he should capture this award.

Best Value: Igor Shesterkin (6.00) - with all due respect to Kaprizov, but Shesterkin is the rightful favourite for the Calder. Shesterkin has emerged as the Rangers' best goaltender. He has three of the team's four wins this season with a 2.16 goals-against average (GAA) on a 92.2 save percent (SV%).

    igor most valued player

Overrated: Nils Hoglander (10.00) - like everything in Vancouver this season and the pre-season, Hoglander is hereby named alone. The 2019 second-round pick has seven points in 18 games and hasn't registered a point in four games or a goal in seven.

NHL Vezina Trophy Props: the Best Goaltender

Goaltenders can single-handedly carry NHL teams to victories, especially this season where defence seems to have evaded most teams. Here are the cream of the cropper NHL player props:

Andrei Vasilevskiy (5.00) - the 2019 winner could win his second award thanks to another strong showing with averages of 1.92 GAA and a 93.3 SV%. It helps to be playing behind one of the best NHL teams, but the Russian has earned it.

Best Value: Jacob Markstrom (9.00) - Markstrom should be considered a close second, especially if he keeps up his strong play and the Flames make the playoffs. The 6'6" Swede has a 2.33 GAA and 92.5 SV% and has all seven of Calgary's wins.

Overrated: Carey Price (9.00) - the Canadiens are crushing expectations this season, but it isn't because of Price. How things have shifted for the Habs as Price is the worst part of the team. The former Vezina and Hart trophy winner is posting his worst stats since 2018 and his 90.1 SV% is below league average.

    Betting on NHL Player Props

You can find NHL player props from several of the top online sportsbooks as indicated. When searching for props, keep in mind as many books as possible as props tend to be lined differently per book, unlike game odds.

This is why we recommend signing up for more than one book. You can also avail of the deposit bonus worth free cash. Use this to wager on the top contenders for the awards to increase your chances of winning.
