NHL Odds Update: The Top Three Canadian Teams

Since the season opener, the NHL’s odds board has seen some big shifts. The Albertan teams have had a hot start as Edmonton has overtaken Toronto while Calgary has moved up several notches. The pair have a combined 16-2-3 record and are realizing their potential early. Here is a quick glimpse on the top three Canadian teams:

Edmonton (10.00). The Oilers have vaulted up to the top of the Stanley Cup odds thanks to a blistering offence. Edmonton is averaging 4.5 goals per game and is firing 50% on the power play. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl should be neck-and-neck in the Hart Trophy race though the Oilers will need to play better defence at some point.

Toronto (12.00). After a rough stretch, Toronto is finally on a roll again though it still ranks just 25th on offence. The Leafs need to do a better job converting on its scoring chances. The power-play is back to being a top unit again and Jack Campbell is playing well in net. The Leafs are not far behind Edmonton as far as being the best Canadian team.

Calgary (23.00). The Flames have lost in regulation just once and have not lost by more than one goal. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom has been on fire while the team is allowing the fewest goals per game. More notably, the offence is rejuvenated. Calgary looks a lot like the team that finished first in the West three seasons ago.

NHL Games Of The Week

Here is a preview of some of the best NHL games of the week, beginning this Thursday. Find these NHL betting odds from the best sportsbooks like BetOnline.

Calgary Flames (7-1-3) at Montreal Canadiens (3-10-0) – Thu, Nov. 11, 7:00 PM ET

  • Puckline: TBD
  • Moneyline: Calgary 1.87, Montreal 2.07
  • Over/Under: TBD

Calgary visits Montreal at a solid price here. The Flames are 2-2 in Montreal and play a physical and defensive style like Montreal though with a lot more firepower. The return of Canadiens goalie Carey Price could make this a tougher matchup, but the Habs’ offence is just miserable so Calgary should get this done. SBR’s Pick - Calgary 1.87.

Edmonton Oilers (9-1-0) at Boston Bruins (5-4-0) - Thu, Nov. 11, 7:00 PM ET

  • Puckline: TBD
  • Moneyline: Edmonton 2.06, Boston 1.89
  • Over/Under: TBD

The Oilers face a tough test as they visit Boston. Edmonton is 2-0-1 in its last three games against Boston and has won in its last visit in the Garden. McDavid and Draisaitl have combined for 20 points in 11 games against the Bruins, whose penalty kill is solid but not impregnable. Edmonton should overpower the Bruins as an underdog. SBR’s Pick – Edmonton 2.06.

San Jose Sharks (6-4-1) at Winnipeg Jets (6-3-2) - Thu, Nov. 11, 8:00 PM ET

  • Puckline: TBD
  • Moneyline: San Jose 2.36, Winnipeg 1.69
  • Over/Under: TBD

Is third time’s the charm for Winnipeg? The Jets lost two hard-fought games against San Jose but they have been getting better since. Winnipeg’s defence has improved and is now allowing just 31.4 shots a game. Winnipeg should also be better at home where they are 4-1 for the season while their goaltenders will be the difference-maker. SBR’s Pick - Winnipeg 1.69.

Vancouver Canucks (5-6-1) at Colorado Avalanche (4-5-1) - Thu, Nov. 11, 9:00 PM ET

  • Puckline: TBD
  • Moneyline: Vancouver 2.44, Colorado 1.65
  • Over/Under: TBD

Colorado has not had an ideal start to their season and could be ripe for an upset against the potentially explosive Canucks offence. However, the Canucks also have the worst penalty kill (63.89%) in the NHL. Thankfully, Thatcher Demko has been a saving grace for the team and they are 6-1-3 in their last ten against Colorado. SBR’s Pick – Vancouver 2.44.

Calgary Flames (7-1-3) at Toronto Maple Leafs (7-5-1) - Fri, Nov. 12, 7:00 PM ET

  • Puckline: TBD
  • Moneyline: Calgary 2.28, Toronto 1.73
  • Over/Under: TBD

A battle of the two of the top three Canadian teams, we have to side with the underdog, Flames here. Calgary is 3-2 in its last five visits to Toronto and has the better offence right now. It would take a bad game from Markstrom and an explosion from Toronto to sway us otherwise. SBR’s Pick - Calgary 2.28.
