NHL 2021-22 Betting Preview: The Cup Comes Home To Canada

NHL 2021-22 Betting Preview: The Cup Comes Home To Canada

In all seriousness, most of Canada's NHL teams can at least contend for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. That is as unlikely as one of them winning the Cup, but it's only crazy until it happens.

Here's a quick look at the Cup odds of each Canadian NHL team courtesy of the top online sportsbooks:

Previewing the Canadian Teams

Let's take a glimpse at where all seven Canadian teams stand including notable additions and subtractions they made (odds via SportsInteraction (SIA)):

Toronto Maple Leafs

  • To Win Stanley Cup: 11.00
  • To Win Division: 3.06
  • To Make Playoffs: 1.11

Stephen A. Smith was painfully correct when he compared the Leafs to the NFL's Cowboys: a team that is always hyped in the offseason then falls on its face in the playoffs. Toronto, on paper, is the best Canadian team but is also the only team here without a playoff series win after the 2004-05 NHL lockout.

The Leafs did not make any notable additions outside of acquiring goaltender Petr Mrazek. But they also lost several key figures like forwards Zach Hyman and Joe Thornton. Unless you're a diehard believer, it's best to wait and get a better price

Edmonton Oilers

  • To Win Stanley Cup: 15.00
  • To Win Division: 4.45
  • To Make Playoffs: 1.30

Like the Leafs, the Oilers have been perpetual playoff disappointments. With Connor McDavid, the greatest hockey player today, the Oilers have a grand total of one playoff series wins. But unlike Toronto, Edmonton was busy in the offseason and acquired the likes of defenseman Duncan Keith and Cody Ceci.

However, the Oilers lost several defensemen like Adam Larsson and Dmitry Kulikov. The defence hasn't been the only issue here as the team needs more scoring support if they are to go beyond the first round.

Montreal Canadiens

  • To Win Stanley Cup: 30.00
  • To Win Division: 29.00
  • To Make Playoffs: 2.53

The Cup runner-ups last season is looking for an encore. But the bad news is, this team may not even make the playoffs despite being third in the Cup odds. Montreal also continued its trend of letting go of key players like shutdown center Philip Danault and budding forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

Last season may have been a fluke as this team struggled to stay above .500 and are now back in a tougher division playing against 31 teams.

Winnipeg Jets

  • To Win Stanley Cup: 35.00
  • To Win Division: 14.00
  • To Make Playoffs: 1.72

Winnipeg has consistently been an above-average team and is the only team to make it to the second round more than once in the last four seasons. But no one seriously considers Winnipeg a Cup contender outside of its most hardcore fans.

The team lost rising prospect Mason Appleton and backup goalie Laurent Brossoit but also acquired help on the d-line with Brenden Dillon and Nate Schmidt. Another deep playoff run is plausible here and maybe more.

Calgary Flames

  • To Win Stanley Cup: 41.00
  • To Win Division: 10.00
  • To Make Playoffs: 2.08

The Flames remain the wild cards among the Canadian teams. Their odds are all over the place as folks aren't sure if we get the team that can win 50 games or a team that contends for the NHL Draft Lottery. But you have to give this team credit: it's not doing things the way most teams are doing it now.

Coach Daryl Sutter is channelling his smashmouth old school style acquiring big physical d-men like Erik Gudbranson and Nikita Zadorv. But the team also lost captain Mark Giordano so it will need to find new leadership. Fast.

Vancouver Canucks

  • To Win Stanley Cup: 48.00
  • To Win Division: 17.00
  • To Make Playoffs: 2.26

Vancouver crashed back to Earth last season thanks to injuries and horrendous defence. The desperate front office did make some nifty moves by acquiring once-great defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson and star forward Conor Garland while jettisoning Loui Eriksson's dead weight of a contract.

The team also acquired goaltender Jaroslav Halak to replace Braden Holtby along with other smaller transactions. If this team can stay healthy and gets great play from its netminders, it can return to the playoffs and make another inspired run.

Ottawa Senators

  • To Win Stanley Cup: 109.00
  • To Win Division: 113.00
  • To Make Playoffs: 7.13

At some point, the Senators will become a legitimate hockey team. Odds indicate this still isn't the year but you never know. Ottawa looked like a playoff team for some stretches last season. If their young forwards like Tim Stuetzle and Shane Pinto continue to improve, this team can score plenty of goals.

Now, stopping goals is another story. As bad as Matt Murray played last season, he should be better this year while acquiring defensemen Michael Del Zotto and Nick Holden should make them better from the back. At these odds, it may be worth betting for Ottawa to find a way into the playoffs.
