NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs 2021: Hot Takes, Hotter Bets

NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs 2021: Hot Takes, Hotter Bets

It's been said that the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win in professional sports. That's because the NHL's Stanley Cup Playoffs are usually filled with upsets with favourites going down in the first round as Cinderella teams and unusual heroes come out of nowhere.

We expect even more upsets this season. To set the table, here are the 2021 Stanley Cup odds per the top online sportsbooks:

NHL Stanley Cup Futures: Dog Bets and Hot Shots

With a wide-open Stanley Cup race, you'll find plenty of hot takes around. But conventional wisdom still picks just a handful of teams as "realistic" Stanley Cup champions. For a sport where your best players only play a third of the game (outside the goalie), that is actually a risky proposition.

If we're dealing with risks, let's go all out and snipe some of the most lucrative dog props:

Stanley Cup Cinderellas: Three Bold Underdog Bets

Once every few seasons, an underdog makes it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. Some even go as far as winning it like the eighth-seeded Los Angeles Kings in 2014 or the "Miracle Blues" in 2019. Here are our picks for the next Disney story (odds via SportsInteraction (SIA)):

    Pittsburgh Penguins — 15.00

Underdogs? Not entirely. But the Penguins being 15-1 to win the cup is bountiful. Sure, they play in the Division of Death, but they have a winning record against the Islanders and Capitals. If they can beat Boston, they should be able to beat the best of the rest.

    St. Louis Blues — 23.00

Can lightning strike twice? The St. Louis Blues overcame a poor start but are 10-4-3 since with wins over the other three playoff teams in its division. The team has some nasty 5-on-5 play led by Ryan O'Reilly while goalie Jordan Binnington has been playing like he wants a second ring.

    Nashville Predators  43.00

It's an insult that the Predators have the highest odds to win the cup. This is a team that has the best record in the division (20-7-1) since mid-March. Goaltender Juuse Saros and the defence have been lights out and have allowed the fewest goals (2.07) in this span.

Upset Special: Three Favourites Who Could Lose Early

When there are ecstatic underdogs, there are weeping favourites. With the tight divisional matchups, a few favourites could be going home early. Here are two matchups worth reviewing as two notable Goliaths could meet their Davids:

Vegas Golden Knights v St. Louis Blues

If you're backing Bayern, might as well add this side prop to your bet. Although England (2.25) is the favourite thanks to having three realistic champions in Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea. But it's not quantity but quality. Bayern has looked primed to repeat and got a favourable draw.

St. Louis Blues def. Colorado Avalanche (TBD)

Colorado is the favourite to win it all thanks to being great everywhere. They have little to no weakness and are 5-3-0 against St. Louis. However, the Blues beat them in the last two meetings and have managed to outshoot them half the time. The tide could be turning...

Nashville Predators def. Carolina Hurricanes (3.05)

The Hurricanes are 6-2-0 against the Predators, but they've lost the last two games and have had a hard time beating Saros. The Canes are a stacked team, but they have chronic goaltending issues. If Saros stands on his head, Carolina could go home early.

Player Props: Three Stars Who Will Steal the Show

Hockey is a team game, but more often than not a few stars steal the spotlight and lead their teams to victories. Here are three stars who are worth watching and betting on throughout the playoffs:

Top Point Scorer of the Series: Mitch Marner (TOR) — 3.50 (via SIA)

You know Marner is living under a shadow when Auston Matthews is even favoured to score more points than him. Matthews does have more points, but it's mostly from goals. Marner's 47 assists are 16 more than second-place. He'll pace Toronto against Montreal while Matthews scores.

Top Goal Scorer of the Series: Taylor Hall (BOS) — 12.00 (via BetOnline)

Taylor Hall has given the Bruins the kickstart they needed and has 14 points in 16 games with the team. Boston gets the missing piece it needs as the team's shooting percent jumps to 12.1% and their PDO to 109.4 when Hall is on the ice. Unreal.

Conn Smyth Trophy: Juuse Saros (NSH) — 56.00 (via Bodog)

If the Predators are going to be the Cinderella team this season, it'll be because of hot goaltending. Saros has been unbeatable since their quarantine break with a 16-6-1 record and a whopping 94.1 save percent. Nashville goes as far as he can stay hot.
