NFL Conference Finals picks: Chalk the better QB's

NFL Conference Finals picks: Chalk the better QB's

Making NFL Conference Finals picks between four brilliant teams with elite quarterbacks is a doozie. But after a Divisional Playoffs that saw some fine quarterbacking and clutch playmaking, we are down to our final four teams.

The top-seeded Green Bay Packers showed the Los Angeles Rams their top-ranked defense was nothing while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stunned the New Orleans Saints. They'll meet in the NFC Conference Championship. On the AFC side, the defending champions Kansas City Chiefs meet the exciting Buffalo Bills. All four matchups feature the four leading MVP candidates at quarterback.

Here are the NFL Conference Finals matchup odds via BetOnline:

NFL Division Finals picks: Take the Best Quarterbacks

When Mahomes is the quarterback with the fewest touchdowns out of the remaining four, you know we've got ourselves the most stacked QB roster in NFL Conference Finals history.

The Divisional Finals saw the better quarterbacks lead their teams to victory and we're not betting against that trend here.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2.66) at Green Bay Packers (1.52)

At long last, we finally get to see Aaron Rodgers face Tom Brady in the playoffs. Rodgers was nearly flawless in dismantling the best defensive team in the playoffs in the Rams. He threw for 296 yards with two touchdowns as the Packers ran away with a 32-18 win.

Brady, on the other hand, helped lead the Buccaneers to a comeback win over New Orleans. He didn't need to do anything spectacular as the Bucs' defence stole the game, picking Drew Brees three times including two in the second half.

Credit to the Bucs' defence, but that was more of Brees showing his wear-and-tear. Rodgers is still in peak form and won't be victimized as easily. In fact, he leads one of the league's most careful offences ranking first in giveaways (11) during the regular season.

Don't expect a repeat of their Week 6 meeting, which Tampa Bay won when Rodgers threw his worst game of the season (a game Brady wasn't so good either). Green Bay's defence is also nothing to sneeze about and ranked 7th in passing yards. Rodgers is also the better quarterback here even if Brady is Brady and it's always intimidating betting against him.

SBR’s pick — Packers (1.52). The Bucs will get plenty of support here because of Brady and their Week 6 blowout of Green Bay. Tampa Bay can make plays on defence, but they are also susceptible to big plays and giving up yards in general. And when push comes to shove, it should be soon-to-be three-time MVP Rodgers who outplays Brady and leads the Packers back to the Super Bowl.

Buffalo Bills (2.37) at Kansas City Chiefs (1.63)

Patrick Mahomes versus Josh Allen. This is the type of quarterback dream matchup akin to Tom Brady versus Peyton Manning... if it happens. Mahomes was hurt in their win against the Browns and backup Chad Henne finished the game as Kansas City edged Cleveland 22-17. Mahomes recorded 255 passing yards and a touchdown (plus one rushing score).

The Chiefs limited the Browns to 5.1 yards per play and were efficient on offence not having to punt at all. Most importantly, backup quarterback Chad Henne made the game-clinching play when he connected with Tyreek Hill on a fourth down. It's this clutch playmaking that makes KC favourites to defend their title.

Allen and the Bills got a bit lucky against Baltimore. Their kicker, Justin Tucker, missed two early field goals while quarterback Lamar Jackson threw a pick-six and got hurt. But Allen also made the big plays when it mattered and his 206 passing yards and one touchdown was more significant than it looked on paper.

The Bills have managed to eke out wins despite getting outgained in yards in both games and allowing a total of 313 rushing yards. Like Kansas City, they come up with big plays on both ends. But in a battle of two clutch teams with world-beating quarterbacks, the Chiefs have the edge.

SBR’s pick — Chiefs (1.63). Buffalo's "bend but don't break" defence could finally meet its breaking point against the dynamic Chiefs. And on the defensive end, Kansas City has the playmakers that Indianapolis and Baltimore lacked against Josh Allen. In what should be a spirited affair, the Chiefs will edge the Bills and return to the Super Bowl.
