The 2019 NFL playoffs boil down to the four best teams in the league, promising a pair of outstanding clashes on Sunday, January 20th. New England will travel to Kansas City to determine the AFC conference championship, while the Los Angeles Rams will visit the New Orleans Saints for the NFC championship. NFL odds this week
favor the Chiefs and the Saints by a field goal, with the expectation of home advantage lifting Kansas and New Orleans to Super Bowl LIII.
AFC Conference Championship
New England Patriots vs Kansas City Chiefs
- Moneyline – Patriots +130 :: Chiefs -150
- Spread – Chiefs -3.0
- Over/Under – +58.0
New England made one of the best teams in the NFL look completely incompetent during the divisional round, destroying the Chargers 41-28. Somehow, the Patriots tricked Los Angeles into forgetting pigskin fundamentals. Playing at Foxborough has that effect on opposing teams, which increases the value of the Chiefs home advantage.
The Patriots defeated the Chiefs in week six during an excellent contest on Sunday Night Football, earning a 43-40 victory via a Gostkowski field goal with three seconds remaining in regulation. Since that clash, Kansas established themselves as the best offensive club in the league, producing the largest NFL scores of the season, including a 54-51 classic against the Rams.
Perhaps more concerning for the Patriots, the Chiefs defense has looked fantastic over their last couple of games, holding Andrew Luck and the Colts to 13 points during the divisional round. Coach Belichick will attempt the same ground and pound strategy that worked well against Los Angeles, but this will be Patrick Mahomes breakout moment.
Patriots vs Chiefs Prediction
The Patriots don’t exude the same playoff dominance on the road. No team has been able to stop the Chiefs offense this season. Kansas City averaged an absurd 37.5 points per game during their four losses, better than their season average.
Betting against the Patriots when they play at home tends to be foolish, but Brady and Belichick have shown vulnerability away from New England. The torch will be passed to Mahomes and Reid as the new dominant pivot-coach duo.
Bet Chiefs -3.0
NFC Conference Championship
Los Angeles Rams vs New Orleans Saints
- Moneyline – Rams +155 :: Saints -185
- Spread – Saints -3.5
- Over/Under – +57.0
New Orleans owns the Rams at home since their rival moved from St. Louis to Los Angeles. The Saints earned a 45-35 victory in week nine at the Superdome, along with a 49-21 home victory in 2016. Despite a home loss to start and finish the regular season, New Orleans is next to unbeatable on home soil.
The Saints secured top spot in the NFC with a win over the Rams, who show signs of weakness defensively, even as Donald and Suh terrorize offensive lines. Los Angeles scored the second most this year, just behind the Chiefs, but the Rams allowed 24 ppg, ranked 20th in 2018.
In contrast, Saints defenders turned up the intensity during mid-season, becoming one of the more underrated crews in the NFL. New Orleans produced the third-most points in the regular season, while the defense ranked 14th in points allowed. The Saints home advantage and improved defense should lead New Orleans to the Super Bowl.
Rams vs Saints Prediction
New Orleans defense has propped up a shaky month from Drew Brees and the Saints offense. Opposing teams have adjusted well to coach Payton’s schemes, limiting the effectiveness of Brees, Thomas, Kamara and Ingram. However, the Rams have a less effective defense compared to the Panthers and Eagles, which will help Brees emerge from relative mediocrity.
Los Angeles is an outstanding football club, but an injury to Cooper Kupp has blunted the offense somewhat, allowing the opposition to key in on Gurley and Goff. The Saints will hold off the charging Rams, clinching their trip to the Super Bowl.
Bet Saints -3.5
Super Bowl LIII Futures
- New Orleans Saints +160
- Kansas City Chiefs +275
- New England Patriots +325
- Los Angeles Rams +340
