Villanova Wildcats (-300) vs. Michigan Wolverines (+250)

The NCAA men’s basketball National Championship is set as the powerhouse Villanova Wildcats — a No. 1 seed — enters action on Monday night as heavy favourites against the red-hot Michigan Wolverines. Tip-off is 9:20 p.m. and the game can be viewed on TBS and TSN.
Coming off a dominating Final Four performance, the high-scoring Wildcats are pegged as the -290 favourites to win the national title. The Wolverines, who are enticing +245 underdogs, have yet to face an offensive team of Villanova’s caliber. On the flip side, the Wildcats have to face a defensive team as good as the one the Wolverines boast.
Basketball experts aren’t giving the Wolverines much of a chance in this one, but Michigan head coach John Beilein is relishing the roll as underdogs. “If you win a Big Ten championship in any way, then you can win a national championship,” Beilein told reporters recently. “But after that, it’s about breaks and anything can happen.”
The Wolverines will need some massive breaks against a Villanova program that has won its last 10 games and posted a remarkable 17.8 scoring margin average against opponents during that stretch. The Wildcats will have a difficult time keeping their up-tempo pace against a Wolverines team that smothers opponents on the defensive end of the floor.
On top of that, the Wildcats won’t have as many open looks from the three-point line like that did in their Final Four blowout against the Kansas Jayhawks.
Here are some other lines for the National Championship to consider betting on.
Total Points (145)
Are we in for a high-scoring affair or will Michigan’s defence keep Villanova’s top-ranked offense at bay? Oddsmakers have set a projected total points mark of 145 for Monday night’s National Championship in San Antonio. The Wildcats have scored 80 or more points in four of their five victories heading into the final, but the Wolverines have held opponents to 65 or less four of their five wins in the tournament. Expect another tight defensive matchup on Monday, which means bettors should take the under at this point.
Point Spread (Villanova, -7)
The Wildcats jumped out to a 22-4 lead in their Final Four victory solely on pin-point three-point accuracy. It was a lead Kansas could never rebound from right from the get-go. If this happens again on Monday night, the Wolverines do not have the firepower to battle back against the Wildcats. Villanova comes in as the 7-point favourites and if it’s basing a decision on against the spread history, taking the Wildcats is a no-brainer. Villanova is 26-12-1 ATS this season. The only problem is Michigan is just as good ATS, going 25-13-1 on the year.
