2020/21 NCAA Basketball Futures Picks: top teams to bet

The ever-unpredictable NCAA basketball will get even crazier thanks to COVID-19. Even with a vaccine on the way, the schedule has been built differently this season, which could throw some players into disarray. But this should be a treat for fans as March Madness might be madder and the road to it could be just as good as the tournament.

Still, some teams will stand this test due to how elite they are. The great teams stay great and with that in mind, we get to pick our Final Four candidates.

Final Four picks 2021

Picking the Final Four is always a tall task, but this year will be even harder. With plenty of unforeseen potentials such as game delays and cancellations or players missing games due to positive tests (God forbid), the field is wide open. Nonetheless, these four teams are solidly built and can withstand the storm (odds via Bodog):

Wisconsin Badgers

Final Four: 3.25
Championship: 13.00

The Badgers will emerge from the Conference of Death that is the Big Ten, which also features heavyweights like Illinois and Iowa thanks to one thing: defence. Ken Pom projects the Badgers to finish with the second-best defence in the country and that is what wins championships.

Wisconsin also returns five key rotation players from last year including big man Micah Potter. The Ohio State transfer transformed the Badgers from a contender to a favourite. The Badgers are a solid bet to at least make the Final Four.

Gonzaga Bulldogs

Final Four: 2.25
Championship: 9.00

In the last few years, the ‘Zags have grown from pretenders to legitimate contenders. This could finally be their year as the Bulldogs have both fans and pundits salivating over their potential. They will still be a top-three offence in the nation and will get better on D with their guards getting improvement.

Gonzaga went 31-2 last year and could have been the top overall seed in the tournament. They’re even better now. With better play from their guards and defensive improvements, the ‘Zags will be a sexy pick to be a Final Four team.

Virginia Cavaliers

Final Four: 2.50
Championship: 10.00

Technically still the defending champions, the Cavaliers are still one of the top teams in the country. The Cavaliers will once again boast the best defence and will now add sharpshooter Sam Hauser, who paired with Jay Huff, will give the Cavaliers two serious deep threats.

Virginia had a bit of a “down” season last year but still managed to be the best defensive team. Their grind-it-out style of play is also well-suited for the NCAA basketball tournament and while they can have plenty of close calls, the Wahoos should advance to the Final Four.

Baylor Bears

Final Four: 2.25
Championship: 9.00

The Bears form one of the three-headed monsters at the top of NCAA basketball with Gonzaga and Villanova as far as pundits are concerned. Even if they lost two-way force Freddie Gillespie, the Bears still have Mark Vital to anchor the defence along with a pair of scrappy guards: MaCio Teague and Davion Mitchell.

Jared Butler also returns as the team’s leading scorer. The 2019-20 All-American was recently named a Big 12 player of the year in the pre-season. Baylor will be tough to stop as they march towards the Final Four.

The Dark Horses for the 2020-21 NCAAB Season

There was a slew of other teams who just missed our Final Four cut: Villanova, Duke, Illinois, and Kansas. But we’ll go even beyond this and name a few teams who likely won’t make the Final Four but shouldn’t be counted out:

Oregon Ducks

Final Four: 5.25
Championship: 34.00

The Ducks continue to be one of the most intriguing teams thanks to coach Dana Altman’s penchant for restructuring his team. Oregon has lost several pieces but will have reinforcements in Eugene Omoruyi and LJ Figueroa – the latter leading St. John’s in scoring last year.

Oregon is fielding a talented team that can be versatile either going small ball or spotting N’Faly Dante for bigger match-ups. It all depends on what seed they get in the tournament but if all breaks in their favour, they could make a run at the Final Four.

Houston Cougars

Final Four: 6.25
Championship: 52.00

The Cougars are making a strong case as the sexy underdog pick with four of their top six scorers returning from last season. Caleb Mills and former McDonald’s All-American Quentin Grimes will be a stout one-two punch as they could hit another level this year.

Houston has one of the most talented backcourts in the country although they are a bit on the smaller side, which could limit their upside. Still, imperfect teams have gone on hot streaks all the way to the Elite Eight or Final Four. This could be a big year for Houston who is still vying for its first Final Four appearance.
