MLB Futures Betting Picks: Expect A New Champion This 2021

MLB Futures Betting Picks: Expect A New Champion This 2021

It was a short and sweet 2020 season for baseball as the Los Angeles Dodgers finally captured the elusive World Series title. But after a wild offseason, expect some hungry contenders looking to dethrone the Dodgers. We’re in for a crazy 2021 MLB season as we look at the MLB Futures Betting Picks.

Baseball is back and by that we mean a “full season of MLB baseball”. Before we get to our MLB Futures betting picks, let’s preview what’s happening for this 2021 season. Not only will the MLB will be back to a full 162-game slate, but it will start having fans in full attendance as the Texas Rangers just showed recently.

There were several major offseason moves among World Series contenders. The defending champions, Los Angeles Dodgers, made some big pitching upgrades while their rivals, the San Diego Padres also added some hot arms. The New York Mets also got into the arms race while on the AL side, the Toronto Blue Jays are looking to make noise. Again.

All these big acquisitions can only mean some big shakeups in the MLB 2021 World Series odds (via the top online sportsbooks):

MLB Futures: Can the Dodgers Repeat as Champs?

The Dodgers (4.25) will go down as one of baseball’s all-time great teams. They’re primed for another World Series run by not only returning most of their key players but also by nabbing the reigning NL Cy Young winner in Trevor Bauer. They also added Corey Knebel, who will significantly bolster their bullpen. In short, the rich got richer.

But history is not on Los Angeles’s side here. The MLB has not seen a repeat champion since the 1999-2000 Yankees over 20 years ago. Not only that, but teams that finish with the best regular-season record have only won the Fall Classic once every four seasons (27 percent) since the Division Series began in 1995.

It’s a shame as the Dodgers’ 2020 run will always have an asterisk due to the abbreviated season. But that also helped them immensely as they did not run out of gas down the stretch. It’s not impossible for them to win though odds are against them, historically.

2021 World Series Futures: Why These Three Teams Could Be The Next Champion

If the Dodgers are not winning the World Series, then who is? It’s practically open season outside of the defending champions. But let’s look at three teams who have a conceivable chance of popping champagne bottles in October (odds via BetOnline):

San Diego Padres

  • World Series: 8.00
  • NL Pennant: 5.25
  • Division: 3.75

If the Dodgers are the kings then the Padres are the princes in waiting. San Diego was an exciting young contender last season. This team was loaded from almost every position and finished in the top-three in the NL in most major batting and pitching categories.

Yet they were still awfully distant from their division rivals, the Dodgers, who swept them in the NLDS.

Instead of basking in their success, the Padres stayed aggressive this offseason. They acquired not one but two high-profile pitchers in LHP Blake Snell and RHP Yu Darvish and they did it without moving a top prospect. This team still has four Top-100 prospects. We’re looking at a budding powerhouse.

New York Mets

  • World Series: 13.00
  • NL Pennant: 7.5
  • Division: 2.65

Speaking of budding powerhouses, the Mets just became one thanks to a blockbuster deal that landed them four-time All-Star SS, Francisco Lindor. They also added catcher James McCann and outfielder Kevin Pillar via free agency. But they didn’t stop here.

New York also acquired reinforcements to their pitching staff including RHP Tajiuan Walker, LHP Joey Luchessi, and RHP Carlos Carrasco. RHP Jacob DeGrom will contend for his third Cy Young as the team’s ace while RHP Noah Syndergaard could return sometime in the summer.

There are lots of firepower here from both ends of the ball.

Toronto Blue Jays

  • World Series: 26.00
  • AL Pennant: 10.00
  • Division: 4.00

If the Padres were the NL’s most exciting team then the Blue Jays are the AL’s. There is a lot to love in this squad that was one of baseball’s most explosive in terms of batting last season. And they just got better by acquiring 2B Marcus Semien and OF George Springer, the 2017 World Series MVP.

From top to bottom, the Jays have guys who can crack. SS Bo Bichette and a fitter 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. should continue to improve. Look out for the Jays to once again be among the AL leaders in the sexy batting stats.

But if anything holds this team back, it’s the lack of pitching depth. RHP Hyun Jin Ryu is a solid ace, but the Jays need help if they are to realize their potential.
