    Kentucky Derby 2021 Betting Predictions

    Kentucky Derby 2021 Betting Predictions

The first jewel of the American Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby, will be run on Saturday, May 1. Up to 20 of the best three-year-olds in the United States will line up for a $3 million purse and a position in eternal horse racing lore. It’s the biggest horse racing day of the year.

With such a big field of horses all trying a mile and a quarter for the first time, the Run for the Roses is the best betting race of the year.

    Kentucky Derby 2021 Odds

    Essential Quality (3.01)

The 2020 Champion Two Year Old Male, Essential Quality remains undefeated after two starts this year. He won a sloppy edition of the Rebel, then wore down fellow Derby contender Highly Motivated to win the Blue Grass.

He is trained by Brad Cox, who has never run in the Kentucky Derby before. However, he is a very consistent horse who has strong pace versatility, and he is already a winner at Churchill, so there is still a lot to like.

    Rock Your World (6.12)

Rock Your World made his first two starts on the turf, but his dirt debut was a wire-to-wire win in the Santa Anita Derby. He impressed in that race, setting a quick pace and still drawing off to win clear of Medina Spirit, who he will face again in Kentucky.

Rock Your World will be trainer John Sadler’s first start in the Kentucky Derby, though he did win one of the world’s biggest horse races at Churchill in 2018 when Accelerate won the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

    Highly Motivated (9.00)

Highly Motivated almost beat Essential Quality in the Blue Grass; even though that was his first try at two turns, he almost gave the champ all he could handle. That suggests he is going the right way

However, he is trained by Chad Brown, whose horses tend to be overbet. Furthermore, his pedigree suggests that he may not want to go much longer than the mile and an eighth of the Blue Grass.

    Hot Rod Charlie (9.00)

Hot Rod Charlie tried mightily in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, finishing only 3/4 length behind Essential Quality at 95.40 odds. He keeps running to his company in every race, and his trainer Doug O’Neill has already won the Kentucky Derby twice.

However, Hot Rod Charlie comes out of the Louisiana Derby. Winners of the Louisiana Derby have only won the Kentucky Derby twice, most recently with Grindstone in 1996, so it’s typically not a prep to get excited about.

    Super Stock (10.00)

Concert Tour got all the talk coming into the Arkansas Derby, but Super Stock got the money coming out of it

The good news is, he may be getting better, and he does have the tactical speed that often comes in handy in the Derby. The bad news is, trainer Steve Asmussen is 0-for-22 with his Kentucky Derby starters.

    Known Agenda (11.00)

He was bred to be a bit later bloomer, and that is coming to reality. Two starts ago he romped in an allowance race, and then returned to win the perennially live Florida Derby convincingly. Both times he rallied from midpack, a style that should suit in a Derby with plenty of early pace.

Jockey Irad Ortiz has partnered with Known Agenda in both of his last two starts and has emerged as one of racing’s best big-money riders. Trainer Todd Pletcher is a two-time Derby winner as well and is on as hot a streak as he has ever been on.

    Kentucky Derby Props

In addition to traditional bets like you can play at the track, many of the top online sportsbooks, like SportsInteraction (SIA), also offer prop bets, which you previously had to travel to a casino to bet. Those prop bets include:

    Winning Time

If you plan to bet a winning time prop, watch the weather forecast. If sloppy conditions are likely, there is a good chance you want to bet the over. It also makes sense to track the winning times on the dirt course in the days leading up to the Derby.

How Many Lengths Will the Winner Win By?

The Kentucky Derby has been decided by less than a length 42 times, and this year’s three-year-old crop is close enough in quality that another photo finish will be no surprise.

    Will Secretariat’s Record Be Broken?

If you see this prop bet, you can bet No with confidence. Feel free to wait for the odds on No to fluctuate upward if you wish, but that’s a 48-year-old record for a reason and none of the horses in 2021 look good enough to give Big Red a run for his money.

Will the Kentucky Derby have a Wire-to-Wire Winner?

Winning wire-to-wire requires not only an aggressive strategy and a fit horse but a relative dearth of other pace horses in the Kentucky Derby. The 2021 Kentucky Derby has plenty of speed likely; if you plan to make this bet, No is the way to go.

Will a Horse Win the Triple Crown?

Two horses in the last six years have won the Triple Crown, American Pharoah and Justify. However, only thirteen horses have ever won the Triple Crown since the first Kentucky Derby in 1875. You are best served to look for a Yes/No bet on this proposition; bet the No.
