Jake Paul vs Ben Askren Odds: Betting Picks on Crazy Fight

Jake Paul vs Ben Askren Odds: Betting Picks on Crazy Fight

It’s the guilty pleasure of combat sports these days as Jake “Problem Child” Paul returns to the boxing ring to take on Ben “Funky” Askren in the boxing fight you never knew you wanted. Paul will be a slight favourite as we go over Jake Paul vs Ben Askren’s odds.

Jake Paul vs Ben Askren’s odds leans towards Paul as a slight favourite. The former YouTube star is at it again. He’s set to return to the boxing ring and he’s taking on “tougher” competition this time: former MMA champion and UFC star Ben Askren.

After violently knocking out former NBA star Nate Robinson last November, a long list of challengers called out Paul. Ultimately, the 24-year-old settled with Askren, who was quite boisterous on social media as well.

Paul and Askren will meet on April 17, 2021, in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium of Atlanta. The fight will be on Triller, just like his previous fight against Robinson. There is a three-fight undercard already set that also features another former MMA fighter in Frank Mir among others.

Expect Paul and Askren to get into the ring around 9 p.m. ET. The fight can be purchased as a pay-per-view on Triller and is $49.99 USD.

Paul vs Askren Odds: The Betting Pick

As crazy as this fight is, there is actually plenty of betting value with his Paul vs Askren odds. Wait for the sportsbooks to open the full betting lines with props and totals as Paul takes on Askren in what should be a straightforward albeit sloppy boxing affair.

Boxing purists and MMA fans alike may want to throw up. But let’s be honest. We all love a good trainwreck once in a while.

Jake Paul (1.74) vs Ben Askren (2.04)

Paul has only been boxing for a couple of years since 2018. He’s 2-0 in the ring but that’s come against another YouTube star and a former NBA player. On paper, he’s a lot more inexperienced in combat than Askren, who has 22 pro MMA fights to his name.

However, this is boxing. Askren is a wrestler and an MMA fighter. In fact, Askren is notorious for having one of the worst striking skills in MMA. He’s won 19 of his 22 fights mostly via his NCAA Division I wrestling. What’s funny is that Askren’s greatest highlight is his five-second knockout loss via a flying knee. He turned Jorge Masvidal into a superstar.

Still, Askren’s combat experience has to account for something. Going up against trained fighters and better strikers means something. Not to mention, Askren trains in Roufusport with the likes of former UFC champions Anthony Pettis and Tyron Woodley. Duke Roufus, the head coach, was a former kickboxer.

Askren will be a significant step up for Paul. Robinson and AnEsonGib are minnows compared to him. But Paul will still have an edge here for two undeniable reasons: size and skillset.

Even if he’s not going to win against real professional boxers, Paul has been training exclusively with boxing whereas Askren trained in MMA. Focusing on one skillset should hone Paul’s skills more than Askren’s training camp for this fight.

Paul is also 5’11″ and 200 pounds with a 76″ reach. That’s like a middleweight by MMA’s standards. Askren is 5’9″ and around 190 pounds with a 72″ reach. He will be the smaller fighter. Additionally, Paul is younger and less shopworn (Askren has had multiple injuries). It’s crazy to think, but he’s the favourite for a reason.

SBR’s pick — Paul (1.74). Much respect to both men. Even if this is a circus fight, it could be a good one. But Paul’s boxing experience, reach advantage, and youth should be the difference here. Askren will have issues closing the distance and Paul can pick him apart from the outside.

Paul vs Askren Props and Other Bets

Prop bets will likely be opened the closer the date to this fight. Here are two props that could yield some extra change and are worth betting on:

Fight Goes To Decision

Paul has a viral knockout and Askren has been knocked out in viral fashion. But this is a different circumstance. For one, Askren is experienced enough in combat to know when to defend and not recklessly charge at Paul.

Also, despite his KO loss, Askren will have a better chin than Robinson. He knows how to take a punch. He may get hurt, but a KO won’t happen.

Askren Will Be First Boxer to Bleed

But as far as taking damage, Askren will be on the worse end of it. Paul will hit harder and hit more often. Askren may get some shots in and he’ll be able to defend, but he’ll have a harder time touching Paul up. If there’s anyone bleeding, it will be Askren.
