CFL 2021 Grey Cup Picks: Hamilton Seeks Fairy Tale Ending In Rematch

CFL 2021 Grey Cup Picks: Hamilton Seeks Fairy Tale Ending In Rematch

The latest CFL football betting odds reveal a switch of the 2019 Grey Cup. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (12-3) enter this contest as the favourite while the home team Hamilton Tiger-Cats (10-6) are underdogs. Winnipeg has won two straight against Hamilton and are unbeaten against them since acquiring quarterback Zach Collaros.

The "Ticats" or "Tabbies" won the previous two meetings before Winnipeg made the switch at QB. This team has won three straight and six of its last seven games. But it needs to find a way to solve Winnipeg's all-time great defence if it hopes to achieve its happy ending.

2021 Grey Cup: How They Got Here

The Blue Bombers and Tiger-Cats had distinct but similar paths to return to the Grey Cup. Say what? These teams both had to overcome first-half deficits and rely on their first-rate defences to lead them back to the big game.

Winnipeg: The Bombers edged the Roughriders in the Division Finals thanks to stalwart play from its defence, which sacked Cody Fajardo and bailed out the offence's mistakes. Collaros threw three interceptions and Winnipeg turned the ball over six times and yet the team shook it off by turning to the returning Andrew Harris.

The 2019 Grey Cup's Most Outstanding Player led a rushing attack that put up 173 yards at a 5.1 average as the Riders couldn't stop Winnipeg from grinding them down. Winnipeg won 21-17.

Hamilton: The Tiger-Cats had to win two games to return to the Grey Cup, starting with a 23-12 shutdown of the Montreal Alouettes. The score is closer than what the game really was. Montreal put up over 400 yards but could not score as the Ticats defence sacked Trevor Harris six times and forced five turnovers.

In the East Finals, Hamilton dispatched of its archrivals, the Toronto Argonauts. Like Winnipeg, Hamilton had to overcome some shaky QB play. Once Dane Evans relieved Jeremiah Masoli, Hamilton did not look back as he completed all 16 of his passes and scored three touchdowns.

2021 Grey Cup Odds & Picks: Best Bets For 108th Grey Cup

Could third time be the charm for the Tiger-Cats against the Blue Bombers? The best online sports betting sites in Canada have them losing this game three out of every five times. But they did beat the Argonauts as a slight underdog so Hamilton has what it takes to overcome the odds.

  • Point Spread: Winnipeg -4.0 (1.87), Hamilton +4.0 (1.95)
  • Moneyline: Winnipeg 1.57, Hamilton 2.46

As dominant as the Bombers have been this season, the team is only 3-4 against the spread (ATS) when playing on the road. Winnipeg is allowing just 13.7 points but as it showed in its previous games, the offence can be the team's Achilles Heel.

Winnipeg was rusty in facing Saskatchewan thanks to not having played any "meaningful" football games since the end of October. But the team still delivered thanks to the return of Harris. The Bombers are a complete team and can play "smash mouth" football or beat teams in a shootout.

But the Tiger-Cats have been one of the best home teams since Orlondo Steinauer took over as coach. In two seasons, the Tabbies are 17-2 at home. Hamilton is also 4-1 ATS in its last five home games. They are as determined as ever and want to gift their loyal fans the Grey Cup.

SBR's Pick - Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1.57). We enjoy a storybook ending as much as every fan does, but there is no denying how great this Bombers team is. This is the best defence in the CFL and it looks even more dominant. But the Ticats' defence is also legitimate so we're looking at a narrow victory for Winnipeg.

  • Over/Under: Over 44.5 (1.95), Under 44.5 (1.87)

The Bombers and Ticats have elite offences, but they have gotten this far thanks to their defences. They have the two best defences with Winnipeg ranking first in almost every category while Hamilton is tied with the most interceptions.

And the stats prove that the defences will dominate: 12 of Winnipeg's last 17 games have gone under and 14 of Hamilton's last 19 have as well. You'd be making a killing betting on the under every time these teams played.

SBR's Pick - Under 44.5 (1.87). The last time these teams played each other was at the start of the season, which was a low-scoring affair and totalled just 25 points. We expect both teams to score more but the totals still stay below 44 points. It's juiced, but they're still betting value here.
