FIFA World Cup 2022 Early Picks: How Far Can Canada Go?

FIFA World Cup 2022 Early Picks: How Far Can Canada Go?

Let's pump the brakes on Canada for a bit. The team may as well finish unbeaten during the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers, but it is nothing more than a long shot looking at the latest soccer betting odds. Beating Mexico and the USA is impressive. But the top European and South American teams are a tier above. Still, Canada's odds are shortening in some books.

FIFA 2022 World Cup Outrights: Canada Versus The Best?

We may be witnessing the best soccer team Canada has produced. Canada is the only unbeaten nation as it keeps cashing bets with our CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers picks. And it is doing all of it without its best player, Alphonso Davies. Even if Mexico and the USA are missing several star players as well, what Canada doing cannot be discounted.

So how will Canada match up against the heavyweights of the FIFA World Cup?

    Brazil (7.00)

The South American giants may be "due" to win the FIFA World Cup after falling short in the Neymar era. He is still arguably the most talented player today. Brazil was upset by Argentina the Copa America but Brazil has since dominated its qualifiers, going 12-3-0 with a +27 goal differential.

Brazil is built on defence, which it has used to nullify almost every team it has faced. However, Neymar will need help on offence if Brazil is to end its World Cup drought - it has failed to advance past the quarter-finals in three of the last four tournaments.

    France (7.50)

The defending World Cup champions were stunned by Switzerland in EURO 2020 after collapsing near the end. But from top to bottom, this is still the most talented roster in the tournament. Still, history is not on their side as no nation has repeated as World Cup champions since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

Still, few clubs will be able to defend the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, and Olivier Giroud. And from the middle, N'Golo Kante, Moussa Sissoko, and Paul Pogba are all elite in their different roles.

    England (8.50)

The question is perpetually the same for the English: is this finally the year? England, despite being one of the most talent-rich nations, has just one World Cup title. Heck, they have not even made the Final since winning in 1966. But this team is trending in the right direction under the tutelage of Gareth Southgate.

England has been unbeaten in 2021 and was this close to capturing its first European title, losing in penalties to Italy. But this has been England's only defeat as this roster nearly rivals France as being the deepest.

    Italy (17.00)

The Italians are looking to be the third EURO champions to win the FIFA World Cup. Spain pulled it off in 2010. However, Italy has yet to qualify for the World Cup and may have to go through the World Cup Playoffs. Italy has not advanced past the Group Stage since winning the 2006 World Cup.

But this isn't your uncle's Italian team anymore. The more youthful squad blends a prolific offence with a sturdy back. This formula has allowed Italy to be nearly unbeaten in 2021, only having lost to Spain in the Nations League semis.

SBR's Pick: FIFA World Cup Winner - Italy (17.00). We like Italy at these odds, especially since this line will shorten considerably once they qualify for the World Cup. While Italy is at 16-1, bet on them to win the World Cup as this squad has what it takes to win.

Canada's Path Through the 2022 FIFA World Cup

It will take a combination of skill, will, and luck for Canada to go as far as they humanly can in the World Cup. Once their World Cup sports betting odds and props are released, you can bet on Canada's stage of elimination from the Group Stage to not being eliminated (winning the World Cup!)

Is it possible for Canada to win? Though very unlikely, it is possible. However, we're putting our money on Canada making it as far as the quarter-finals. We have seen several longshots go deep into the tournament.

South Korea made it to the semi-finals as a massive underdog in 2002. Sweden advanced to the quarter-finals despite starting in the "Group of Death" with Germany and Mexico in 2018. And Ghana was one Luis Suarez handball away from becoming the first African team to make the semi-finals in 2010.

SBR's Pick: Stage of Elimination - Quarter-Finals (TBD). We are in a golden age of Canadian soccer and the men have their best opportunity to go into uncharted territory. Canada has a good chance to get a manageable draw in the Group Stage. A top-two finish is possible where Canada may match up with a top-20 team in the Round of 16 where it can pull off an upset.
