Colorado Avalanche: Fighting back from their early season slide
Forecast as a low range Stanley Cup contender back in October, with a +6600 NHL Championship money line price, Colorado looked the part as they were 9-14-0 during the first two months of the season. Though they have been somewhat streaky since, the Avalanche have played well as they went 9-3-2 in December and followed that with a 9-5-0 mark in January. February started slow as Colorado dropped four straight (one in overtime) but they have won four of their last contests including a pair of 3-2 wins versus Montreal at home on Wednesday and in Edmonton last night.
Vancouver Canucks: Suffering from a lack of scoring beyond the All-Star Sedin twins
Playing in numerous close contests early on, twelve of the Canucks first 38 games went into extra time, Vancouver closed the 2015 portion of their schedule with middling 14-15-9 mark. Working overtime continued in January as six of the Canucks twelve matches went beyond three periods en route to a 6-4-2 record. February has been a different story though as Vancouver has slide to a 1-5-1 mark and they have lost four straight contests. The 'Nucks set a futility record during those losses by becoming the first team in NHL history to lose four straight games all by the same 5-2 score.
Avalanche vs Canucks NHL Call: Vancouver ended a four-game losing streak, and sent Colorado to a fourth straight defeat, when they won the first meeting 3-1 in Denver twelve days ago. Prior to that, the Avalanche had won five of the last seven contests by a 26-18 combined count. Semyon Varlamov (22-15-3 GAA 2.67) faces Ryan Miller (12-17-8, 2.64 GAA 0.915) in the goaltending battle here. Varlamov has won three of his last four starts while Miller has lost six of his last seven games. Though Colorado playing back-to-back with travel is a slight concern, the Avalanche have won four in a row in that exact dynamic recently. While we do like Colorado straight up here, we will take the Avalanche with a head start and wager five-units on the William Hill puck line price.
