    CFL Week 1 Predictions

    CFL Today's Games

A Grey Cup rematch between Calgary and Ottawa on Friday, June 22nd highlights the Week 1 action in the CFL, but it's far from the only good game on the board. We've got QB Darian Durant suiting up for the first time as a Montreal Alouette and facing his old franchise the Saskatchewan Roughriders, a Edmonton/BC showdown between two teams out West with high hopes in 2017, and the first installment of the Battle of Ontario this year between Hamilton and Toronto.

As with the beginning of the year in any sport, bankroll management is key. There is plenty of season left to make bigger wagers on in the year and there will be certain situations, injuries, etc, that will pop up and give you a much bigger edge than most opening week games can provide.

That being said, there are still some quality situations here in Week 1 for the four games on the schedule and I'll be looking to attack a few of them. The main scenario there is one I like to use in every sport and that's to fade the defending champion against the spread and/or ML.

Canadian Football League Picks Week 1

The Calgary/Ottawa Game isn't the one to open up the season, but the league has given them the primetime slot of Friday Night Football. Of all the four games this week it will be that one that has the most eyes on it, and with the "fade the champion" spot joined with a Grey Cup rematch contest, that's where my free betting selections will begin this week.

The Calgary Stampeders have had all winter to think about what could have been in that epic Grey Cup game that went to OT. If it wasn't for their disastrous 1st half, chances are they blow Ottawa out of the water in that contest and claim their 2nd championship in three years.

Game 1 of the 2017 doesn't have as high of stakes, but Calgary will be out for revenge in a big way, and with Ottawa losing many key pieces from their championship roster a year ago (QB Henry Burris, WR Ernest Jackson), this game should be the Calgary blowout many expected last year.

Admittedly, laying 3-1 on a ML bet is not something you'll see me do very often, but the point spread (Montreal -7) is a few points too high for my liking, especially in Game 1 of the year. But Darian Durant's first game in his new home against his former team is going to be one he and his teammates want to desperately get and I do believe they will.

Week 1 concludes with the Battle of Ontario on Sunday afternoon, and it should be the Tiger-Cats who start the year with a 1-0 mark. Toronto enters the 2017 with the longest odds to win the Grey Cup and they've got an old QB in Ricky Ray who just doesn't have much talent around him to help.

Conversely, Hamilton is a much better team (at least on paper) and they'll be looking to build upon a disappointing 2016 campaign that saw injuries and poor play derail their season. A Week 1 win in convincing fashion over a hated rival is jsut what they need to get 2017 started right.
