After a stunning Week 1, the NFL’s Super Bowl odds are moving. We look at which contenders have fallen and which have risen just ahead of Week 2, which we also pick three quality games from to break down.

CFL Labour Day Classic: From Chalk to Upsets
There is a little bit of something for every fan with these Labour Day Classic games. From a betting perspective, chalk artists can parlay two games while those looking to snipe underdogs have a pair of options as well:
Montreal Alouettes (1-2) @ Ottawa Redblacks (1-2)
- Date/Time: Fri, Sep. 3 – 6:30 P.M. ET
- Spread: Montreal -6 (1.85), Ottawa +6 (1.97)
- Totals: Over 43 (1.9), Under 43 (1.9)
Montreal kicks things off with some steam on their spread. These teams have identical records and their solitary wins came against Edmonton. However, the Als are tied as the biggest favourites because they have a significantly better offence.
The Redblacks are dead last in practically every major offensive category including averaging just 10.7 points per game. Matt Nichols has yet to throw a touchdown pass. This is a chance for Montreal’s defence, which allows the most points per game, to look good.
SBR’s Pick: Montreal -6 (1.85): The Als have allowed a lot of points, but that’s also because they’ve faced two of the more explosive teams in the CFL. This team has the second-most sacks and is just head-and-shoulders above Ottawa in almost every aspect.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3-1) @ Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-0)
- Date/Time: Sun, Sep. 5 – 5:30 P.M. ET
- Spread: Winnipeg +3.5 (1.9), Saskatchewan -3.5 (1.9)
- Totals: Over 43 (1.9), Under 43 (1.9)
Things heat up over at the Mosaic Stadium as Saskatchewan looks to win for the fourth straight time against their archrivals. This is a battle between two of the CFL’s premier defenses and is also a rematch of their 2019 Division Finals, which Winnipeg won by the skin of their teeth.
Winnipeg has been peerless with the exception of a road loss against Toronto. But the Blue Bombers’ vaunted defense is still as elite and leads the league in turnovers. The Roughriders, on the other hand, lead the CFL in sacks and have allowed the fewest points while scoring the most.
SBR’s Pick: Saskatchewan -3.5 (1.9): The Roughriders are on a mission here. They embarrassed the Tiger-Cats in Week 2 and ought to do the same to the Grey Cup champions. Saskatchewan has won 14 of the last 15 Labour Day Classic meetings by an average of 16.2 points.
Toronto Argonauts (2-1) @ Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1-2)
- Date/Time: Mon, Sep. 6 – 12:00 P.M. ET
- Spread: Toronto +2 (1.9), Hamilton -2 (1.9)
- Totals: Over 44 (1.9), Under 44 (1.9)
Toronto finds itself atop the East Division thanks to a slow start from the Tiger-Cats. Hamilton is sputtering on offence ranking second-last in the league in yards per play (3.6) and points per game (13.3). Jeremiah Masoli has been atrocious and has one touchdown versus four picks.
On defence, the Tabbies have been solid but need to step up on causing turnovers. Toronto has been creative with its offensive playcalling. They are second in the CFL in yards per play (5.1) and also have a win over Winnipeg on their cap.
SBR’s Pick: Toronto (2.15): The Boatmen are ahead of schedule it seems. The team rebuilt itself with a slew of signings and it’s paying dividends as Toronto looks like a true wild card. Hamilton will need to figure out its offence now as their defence alone won’t beat the Argos.
Edmonton Elks (1-2) @ Calgary Stampeders (1-3)
- Date/Time: Mon, Sep. 6 – 3:30 P.M. ET
- Spread: Edmonton +6 (1.9), Calgary -6 (1.9)
- Totals: Over 42.5 (1.9), Under 42.5 (1.9)
Capping off the Labour Day Classic is what appears to be a lopsided duel between Edmonton and Calgary. It speaks volumes to how bad Edmonton has been playing that Calgary, which has also struggled this year, is still a six-point favourite.
The Stamps’ offence has been shaky but so has their defence, which hasn’t made much of an impact. Edmonton has racked up plenty of yards but has been so incompetent at turning them into points or wins. Trevor Harris and co. will need to fix that quickly.
SBR’s Pick: Edmonton +6 (1.9): The Elks are a better team than their record or their lack of scoring indicates. This team keeps shooting itself in the foot, but they are a better bet than the uninspiring Stampeders. Look for Edmonton to keep this game close.
