CFL 2021 Week 8 Picks: Who’s Looking Great Heading To The Halfway Point?

Entering Week 8, the halfway mark, we look at which CFL teams are trending and which ones to fade. Plus we cap the four matchups for the weekend.

Even after seven weeks of the season, we’re still not entirely sure how the CFL season will finish. But we’ve gotten enough of a glimpse of all nine teams to separate the contenders from the pretenders. There have been some seismic shifts with the CFL’s Grey Cup odds (via the best online sportsbooks) as we approach Week 8, the halfway mark.

108th Grey Cup Updated Odds: Buying or Selling New Odds

Looking at the odds, most of the teams have either gone up or down in price. Depending on where they’re trending, it may be best to “sell” by fading the teams at these odds or to “buy” by betting on them now while their odds are this high (odds via Bodog):

Buy: Calgary Stampeders (13.00)

The Stampeders are enduring one of the worst starts to their season but that could all change with quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell back on the field. He looked rusty but still led Calgary to a win over their rivals, the Elks. At 13-1, the Stamps are unusual underdogs to win the Grey Cup.

This price will go down once they start chaining together wins so grab them now.

Sell: Saskatchewan Roughriders (5.75)

On the other end of the trend are the Roughriders. Not only did Winnipeg sweep them in back-to-back weeks, but they may also have lost QB Cody Fajardo for some time. If he’s able to play, will he be as effective? If he isn’t, who replaces him?

In the CFL, it’s almost impossible to win without a stable quarterback so consider passing on Saskatchewan in the meantime.

Buy: BC Lions (8.00)

The Lions didn’t impress many folks with their two wins over the league’s worst team. But the team still has the best quarterback in the league in Michael Reilly and when the offensive line is doing its job, he can light up any team. Additionally, the Lions have a defence that is great at forcing turnovers.

This is a deadly combo as giving Reilly as many chances to score is a recipe for success. The Lions were one of our underdogs to win the Grey Cup. There is still value in their line here.

CFL 2021 Games of the Week 8

Two double-headers are in store for the CFL’s midway point. Judging by the standings, three of these games could cause even more big changes to the Grey Cup odds. We went 2-of-4 with our Labour Day picks last time but scored big on Edmonton upsetting Calgary. Let’s look at the games of the week (odds via SportsInteraction (SIA)):

Calgary Stampeders (2-4) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-3)

  • Date/Time: Fri, Sep. 17 – 6:30 P.M. ET
  • Spread: Calgary +3.5 (1.91), Hamilton -3.5 (1.91)
  • Totals: Over 41.5 (1.91), Under 41.5 (1.91)

The Tiger-Cats have been hit by injuries. The quarterbacks are banged up with Dane Evans out four to six weeks while Jeremiah Masoli has banged up ribs. The team is also potentially without receivers Bralon Addison and Brandon Banks. The offensive line has also allowed the most sacks in the league (20).

Hamilton went 9-0 at home in 2019 but this depleted offence will have its hands full against the Stampeders. This is an opportune time for Mitchell and co. to get to work. Bet Calgary or pass.

Toronto Argonauts (3-2) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-2)

  • Date/Time: Fri, Sep. 17 – 6:30 P.M. ET
  • Spread: Toronto +4.5 (1.91), Saskatchewan -4.5 (1.91)
  • Totals: Over 42.5 (1.91), Under 42.5 (1.91)

The Argonauts are tantalizing underdogs here, especially if Fajardo remains banged up. Their defence allows the lowest first-down conversion via passing at just 31.6% while they have weapons on offence.

The Roughriders, however, are 11-2 at home over their last 13 games. They should be able to hold down the fort and win this one, but the best bet here is for the score to go under 42.5 points.

BC Lions (3-2) at Montreal Alouettes (2-2)

  • Date/Time: Sat, Sep. 18 - 6:00 P.M. ET
  • Spread: BC pk (1.91), Montreal pk (1.91)
  • Totals: Over 48.5 (1.91), Under 48.5 (1.91)

A true pick’em, we have a battle between two contenders looking to prove they are “legit”. The Lions are 2-1 on the road while Montreal allows the second-highest first down conversion via passing at 44.1%.

If the Als can’t pressure Reilly, the Lions could just run away with this one. But Montreal’s dynamic offence will fire back so expect a high-scoring game that may just blow over the 48.5 mark.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-1) at Edmonton Elks (2-3)

  • Date/Time: Sat, Sep. 18 - 8:45 P.M. ET
  • Spread: Winnipeg -6.5 (1.91), Edmonton +6.5 (1.91)
  • Totals: Over 41.5 (1.91), Under 41.5 (1.91)

The Bombers will test the Elks’ high-flying offence with their top-rated defence. Winnipeg has allowed just two passing touchdowns versus seven interceptions. On the flipside, Edmonton’s defence leads the league in limiting completions at just 59.7%.

The totals may well go below 41.5 here, but Edmonton could make this a close one. Ignore their 0-3 record at home and take them to cover via any of the top online sportsbooks we have listed below.
