Canelo vs Saunders Betting Picks: Does Saunders Have A Shot?

Canelo vs Saunders Betting Picks: Does Saunders Have A Shot?

The pound-for-pound best boxer in the world returns as super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez meets fellow champion Billy Joe Saunders to unify their titles. Alvarez is the rightful betting pick as a favourite here, but Saunders has plenty of bite as an underdog. Let’s preview this upcoming bout to see where the value lies.

It’s a mega-sized super middleweight match as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (55-1-2, 37 KOs) looks to unify the WBA (Super), WBC, WBO, and The Ring titles against the undefeated “Superb” Billy Joe Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs) this Saturday, May 8. Our Canelo vs Saunders betting picks won’t shock anyone, but we’re confident there’s plenty of value here.

Canelo will be a sizable 1.13 betting favourite across most of the best online sportsbooks while the comeback on Saunders is around 6.50. The two will meet at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas and will be broadcasted live by DAZN from anywhere in the world except Mexico. Coverage begins 8:00 p.m. ET with the two likely to step into the ring around 11:00 p.m. ET.

Canelo vs Saunders Odds: The Betting Picks

Canelo is the rightful betting pick versus Saunders. But before laying down the chalk, Saunders is a challenger not to be trifled with. he could be Canelo’s toughest test outside of Gennady Golovkin and there could be close moments in this bout.

Overall, Canelo should prevail in this legitimate boxing match that should be everything that the ludicrous Jake Paul versus Ben Askren fight wasn’t. The full betting odds are available from several of the top books. Wait until closer to the boxing match as props and more lines should be made available.

For now, let’s break down this championship match:

Canelo Alvarez (1.13) vs Billy Joe Saunders (6.50)

It’s not every day we can say that a 1.13 favourite has plenty of value. But consider that this will be one of the best lines we can find on Canelo outside of the two GGG fights. Both the oddsmakers and fans have plenty of respect for Saunders.

The WBO champion lacks the power to keep Canelo honest, but he will be the faster and longer boxer here. The southpaw could pose problems for Canelo with his straight punches and jabs while he utilizes his footwork to elude Canelo.

Saunders can frustrate Canelo by hitting him straight and being quick enough before Canelo can get a proper bead on him. However, Saunders can’t play patty cake with Canelo for the entirety of the fight. Eventually, Canelo will tenderize his body and open him up.

Canelo will also be able to march down Saunders at some point. The Mexican has fantastic combinations and mixes things up. He’s not a one-trick pony that Saunders can exploit from the outside. Not to mention that Canelo is also fantastic at finding angles and timing as a counter-puncher.

At some point, Canelo will hurt Saunders enough to crowd him and put him against the ropes. The first six rounds may be close but Canelo can start pulling away by doing more damage and landing more significant shots as the round goes longer.

At worst, Saunders can make it close by keeping Canelo on the outside. However, Saunders is not going to take over this fight. He isn’t going to hurt Canelo or even be the aggressor. And that is his biggest issue as Canelo’s forward pressure could be the deciding factor here if the scoring is tight through 12 rounds.

SBR’s pick — Canelo (1.13). Saunders should be able to make this a close fight at the beginning, but eventually, Canelo will find openings and land the more meaningful punches. It could get close on the scorecards, but Canelo’s aggression will earn him the judges’ nods across the board.

Canelo vs Saunders: Round Totals

If there is a finish here, it will likely come late and via Canelo. Saunders has never been beaten and hardly even looked rocked even against a power puncher like David Lemieux. But he also hasn’t faced a boxing machine like Canelo.

It’s possible that Canelo eventually wears down Saunders’ defenses. Those body shots can make him less spry and more prone to eating a counter or an uppercut. While Canelo may not knock Saunders out unconscious, he could still TKO him either via a referee stoppage or the corner throwing in the towel.

That’s possible, but Saunders’ durability and elusive style should make this more of a drawn-out affair. Six of Canelo’s last eight bouts all went over 10½ rounds with his two early stoppages coming against his two most inferior opponents.

SBR’s pick — Over 10½ (1.60). As powerful as Canelo is, Saunders is difficult to put away. The Brit is unbeaten because he’s both elusive and durable. Canelo may be able to hurt him and maybe even knock him down, but Saunders will recover and maintain his defensive approach throughout the fight.

Canelo and Saunders are just two fantastic boxers you can bet on from the top online sportsbooks. Most of the other big boxing matches will be available.
