Breeders’ Cup 2020 Picks

Breeders’ Cup 2020 Picks

It’s the biggest horse racing event of the fall as we round up the Breeders’ Cup 2020 picks. It starts with the $6 million Classic as this year has a stacked crop of contenders. When we say it’s anyone’s race, we literally mean it as there are at least five realistic horses in the running. Rounding out the Breeders’ Cup are the $4 million Turf and $2 million Distaff among others.

Let’s break down the Breeders’ Cup picks starting with the Classic:

Meet the Breeders’ Cup Classic contenders

We’ll look at the notable contenders for this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic including how they got here. There can be up to 14 starters in this year’s event although we’re settling with eleven (ten if not counting Swiss Skydiver). We’ll be using odds courtesy of BetOnline here:

Improbable (4.50)

A co-favourite of this year, Improbable automatically qualified by winning both the Whitney and Awesome Again races. He also won the Hollywood Gold Cup. Trained by the best today, Bob Baffert, this might Improbable’s year after falling short for the last two years.

Improbable began his career as a hyped unbeaten juvenile before flopping out of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. Despite his shortcomings, Improbable has shown improvements this year and that could be enough to get him over the hump.

Tiz the Law (4.00)

The 2020 Belmont Stakes winner also won the Travers Stakes and Florida Derby and was at one point the horse to beat. That all grinded to a halt after Tiz the Law lost the Kentucky Derby despite being a heavy favourite, losing out to Authentic. This was followed by him not racing in the Preakness Stakes.

Tiz the Law may have lost some momentum, but the magic he showed this summer is far from a fluke. Skipping the Preakness only gives him ample rest as he aims to finish this year strong.

Maximum Security (5.50)

The four-year-old had an interesting 2019, to say the least with highs and lows to match any rollercoaster. He was dubbed the American Champion Three-Year-Old Male Horse but would be most remembered for relinquishing the Kentucky Derby due to interference.

Maximum Security has looked a bit shopworn as of late although he did win the Pacific Classic along with the Saudi Cup and San Diego Handicap. He might just have enough left in the tank to pull a slight upset here.

Authentic (7.00)

The Kentucky Derby winner is but a dark horse for the Classic as he’ll be going up against a stacked field. Authentic showed vulnerability by getting outclassed by the filly Swiss Skydiver in the Preakness. He’s won other notable races like the Haskell Invitational but the Classic is a different beast.

Also trained by Bob Baffert, Authentic’s odds would be much lower had he not had this pedigree. He might still be living off his Kentucky Derby victory, but Authentic should never be counted out.

The Other Contenders

  • Tom’s D’etat (7.00) may be the dark horse of the group. The seven-year-old already outdid Improbable at Oaklawn. He’s been in the shadow of Improbable and By My Standards but he has enough speed and power to pull an upset.
  • Global Campaign (21.00) won the Woodward Stakes and is a talented up-and-comer. He’ll be another dark horse to watch as he could have the right flash at the right time to give the top contenders a run for their money.
  • By My Standards (19.00) is a top-notch horse in his own right, but he’s been inconsistent. He has the burst to finish in the top three and he may even be in the running. But it’s a matter of doing it for ten furlongs and that is a tall favour.

Breeders’ Cup Picks: the other notable races

Other than the Classic, there are at least seven or eight other races worth taking part in. Let’s look at two of the more notable ones:

Breeder’s Cup Distaff

The Distaff is the Classic for fillies and mares and is usually a precursor to the Classic on the race day. This year, it’s a two-horse showdown between Monomoy Girl (2.50) and Swiss Skydiver (3.50). Harvest Moon (10.00) is a distant third.

It’s unclear if Swiss Skydiver will race here or the Classic, but if she does, expect Monomoy to be the significant favourite though Harvest Moon and Valiance (13.00) could garner some support.

Breeder’s Cup Turf

The Longines Turf is the second-biggest race in the event coming in with a $4 million prize. Much like the Classic, this year’s race will be wide-open with a three-way at the top between Mogul (4.00), Magical (4.00), and Tarnawa (4.50). Also in consideration are Lord North (8.00), Channel Maker (11.00), and United (11.00).
