Bill C-218 Passed! What This Means For Canada

Bill C-218 Passed! What This Means For Canada

Canadians Can Now Legally Make Single Sports Wagers

With Bill C-218's passing, Canadians will finally be able to offer players the chance to make single sports wagers. This means that government-sanctioned entities like Pro-Line will offer tickets that go beyond parlays. Currently, Canadians betting through these avenues had to parlay several bets together. Betting on a single game or event was unheard of beyond online sportsbooks.

Canadians need just to wait a bit more. Richard Wagner, Canada's chief justice and current government administrator gave Bill C-218, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, Royal Assent. This was the final step in the legislative process. The House of Commons was then advised to move through its official record.

Now, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his cabinet will set a date for legislation, which is done through an order-in-council. At this point, it will be official and single-event sports betting (except horse racing and pari-mutuel wagering) will finally be widely available for Canadians.

This was a long time coming for Canada. This bill was first introduced in February 2020 but efforts to push for single-event sports wagering to be legalized has occurred since 2011. At this time, Bill C-290 was introduced and was passed by the House of Commons.

However, the bill met some pushback, particularly from professional sports leagues, and was eventually forgotten about when the 2015 federal action took place.

But a lot has happened in the six years particularly the continued legalization of sports wagering in the United States. With the neighbours to the south opening its gates to legal sports betting, it was only a matter of time for Canada to follow suit. Even the professional sports leagues that once opposed the bill now fully support it. It's better late than never!

What does This mean For Canada and Its Sports Industry?

This is a momentous occasion for the nation and the sports industry, particularly the NHL and CFL. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, previously a sports betting skeptic, became a proponent of it and was one of many commissioners to pen a joint statement to several key members of the government.

"The National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, and the Canadian Football League support an amendment to Canada’s federal laws that would authorize provinces to offer to bet on single sporting events," read the statement.

"Sports betting gives fans another exciting way to engage with the sports they love. Because a legal and regulated sports betting market in Canada would be beneficial to sports and their fans, we urge prompt action to make this a reality."

Their support would play a big role in the legalization of the bill also because it would mean more exposure, revenue, and prominence for the leagues.

CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie also testified before the Senate's standing committee to support the bill. "This legislation is long overdue, it has been long-awaited and it should be considered swiftly before the summer recess," Ambrosie said.

Leagues like the CFL and its teams have had public partnerships with online books like SportsInteraction (SIA). The NFL and its teams have already started partnering with several sportsbooks. And Adam Silver, commissioner of the NBA, wants the NBA more involved in the industry.

And it's not the sports leagues or the teams, but the arenas as well. The Capital One Arena, home to the NBA's Washington Wizards and the NHL's Washington Capitals has partnered with William Hill to open the first-ever physical sportsbook in a sports arena.

Making sports wagering more accessible for Canadians can only mean an upwards trajectory for Canadian leagues, teams, and sportsbooks.

The Top Online Sportsbooks Should Celebrate

Speaking of sportsbooks, this can only mean a business should pick up. As they say, "the rising tide lifts all boats". So even with the government's entities picking up on its wagering options, the online sportsbooks should see an influx of new and returning sports bettors.

Sportsbooks will still offer plenty that the government-sanctioned books don't. In particular, online sportsbooks have a deposit bonus for first-time players. Many of these books will add free betting credits. Others, if not most, offer many promotions via newsletters, monthly contests, or via events.

With sports wagering now becoming more mainstream, online sportsbooks may now also diversify or expand on their promotions. Take a cue from the United States with DraftKings and Fan Duel. The two American books have presented a plethora of promotions that are widely marketed.

Many books like Bet365 also have live streaming platforms available for their members. And its live wagering continues to be cutting edge.

Last but not least, online sportsbooks still offer more sports betting markets at better odds. Their parlay odds were already significantly better and you can expect the juice here to be lower.

One thing is for certain, there will now be more options for Canadians when it comes to online sports wagering. It's a great day to be a sports fan!
