Best NHL Picks Tonight April 8, 2017

Pittsburg @ Toronto NHL Odds

My Team's Next MatchToronto Maple Leafs

Toronto has everything to play for tonight as a win would give them that 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. It's been a miserable few years for Toronto but this season has brought plenty of hope and excitement, and it would be tremendous for this young core to taste what playoff hockey is all about in their first season together. It won't be easy though as the defending Stanley Cup champions stand in their way tonight, although likely not at full strength.

Pittsburgh has nothing to play for this weekend as they already know they'll be hosting Columbus in the 1st round of the playoffs. It's all about keeping their team as healthy as possible and maybe giving some guys some extra rest here, but don't think for one second the guys that do suit up for Pittsburgh will lie down for Toronto. The Penguins did lose 2-1 in OT the last time they were in this building and making Phil Kessel's old team hit one more speed bump in their playoff hunt is something that's not lost on the Pens.

Even with the strong possibility the Penguins rest some of their bigger names, it would not be surprising to see a few goals scored tonight. Toronto has no choice but to be aggressive and try to build a multiple-goal lead given their history of coughing up games this year, and with Pittsburgh trying to stay healthy for a long post-season run, they are likely to lay off the physical play.

That equates to a lot of room out there for the skill guys to move around with the puck, and given we haven't seen a Pittsburgh/Toronto game sail 'over' the posted total this year, there is a good chance we do tonight.

Best NHL Bets Tonight | April 8, 2017

The final Saturday of the NHL's regular season brings a plethora of games, many of which don't mean a whole lot. There are teams still fighting for seeding in the playoffs, but for the most part the matchups are set and that makes handicapping games really tough at this time of year. Not knowing what type of effort or motivation levels a team will bring to the ice is concerning, however, there are still a few other strong betting plays to wager on tonight's board.

Nashville sits in 8th in the West and you get the feeling they don't mind that position at all. Finishing 8th would set up a 1st round matchup with division rival Chicago and although they haven't had too much success against the Hawks this year (1-4 SU), there is a certain level of familiarity there that the Predators likely prefer. Winnipeg has also had a down year and would love to go out with a W for the home crowd.

Dallas has been going through the motions for most of this week and after a very disappointing year are just waiting for their summer vacation to arrive. Chances are we see another bad effort from a Stars team that gave up 7 goals last time out and even though it's Colorado, these odds can't be passed up.

Surprisingly, the Sharks are just 1-3 SU vs. Calgary this year and given the chance they could meet in the 2nd round should both sides advance, beating the Flames here would be a nice confidence boost. Calgary is at the end of a three-game trip through California and is looking ahead to getting back home for a few days before the playoffs begin.
