Best Boxing Betting Picks: Golovkin Must Get Past Murata In Japan

Best Boxing Betting Picks: Golovkin Must Get Past Murata In Japan

Don't count him out just yet. Gennady Golovkin a.k.a. "GGG" has plenty left in the tank as he looks to make short work of fellow middleweight champion Ryota Murata. That this fight is in Murata's home country of Japan matters not on the boxing sports betting odds as Golovkin should beat up Murata. However, based on these odds, we think the best value is with the underdog.

Gennady Golovkin (c) vs Ryota Murata (c) Betting Pick

Gennady Golovkin and Ryota Murata were supposed to fight on December 29 but Japan closed its borders due to the COVID Omicron outbreak. The fight is back on having extended each boxer's layoff for three more months. Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) last boxed in December 2020 while Murata's (16-2-0, 13 KOs) was in December 2019. The ring rust may play a factor here.

Why Gennady Golovkin (1.15) Will Win

You will hardly find a boxer who blends power and precision quite like Gennady Golovkin. The Kazakh is a well-oiled fighting machine and even if he isn't quite as spry as he used to be, he has over 40 fights worth of experience and has only failed to win against one man: Canelo Alvarez, in two fights many believe he won.

However, the last fight with Alvarez was telling. Golovkin appeared to be more passive as Canelo managed to edge him by being the aggressor. This is something Golovkin has struggled with in recent bouts. He did not look good against Sergiy Derevyanchenko and barely won that fight. Though he did knock out Kamil Szeremeta one year later.

At his age, Golovkin is vulnerable to getting outworked, especially by younger and hungrier boxers. But that is just one-half of the equation. Golovkin can still land the cleaner punches and when it comes to hurting opponents, it's not just how hard you throw - it's how accurate.

Whether he's the aggressor or on his backpedal, Golovkin will be a prolific boxer. And if Murata makes mistakes, which he will given his inexperience, Golovkin will punish him for it.

Why Ryota Murata (4.50) Will Win

We're not kidding around when we pegged Ryota Murata as being the best boxing betting pick and potentially the biggest underdog bet in the best upcoming fights. Murata is outclassed by Golovkin. But he has plenty of things going for him even if he already has two losses on his resume.

Murata has half of Golovkin's experience and has lost to the likes of Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam and Rob Brant, two journeymen. But he did avenge these losses by finishing both boxers. The 36-year-old is no spring chicken but he has taken less damage than Golovkin and he has the home crowd on his side.

The ring rust may get Murata to start slower than usual, but once he gets going, he should be the one dictating the pace in this fight. With the Japanese crowd cheering everything he does, Murata may just edge Golovkin on the scorecards even if GGG is the one landing the better punches - as he did in the Canelo fights.

What Murata must prove is his durability. He is an offensive boxer and a power puncher. But can he take it? Because when he makes a mistake, Golovkin will make him taste his own medicine. If he's up to the task, he is a lucrative bet at 4.50.

    Golovkin vs Murata: Our Pick

From a straight pick and with no betting involved, we like Gennady Golovkin to knock Ryota Murata out at some point here. However, we are not loving his line and think that Ryota Murata has some value as a 4.50 underdog.

Murata will be able to outwork Golovkin here and having the home crowd cheering him on will only make him stronger the longer the fight goes. If he can survive Golovkin early and work out his ring rust, he should be able to push Golovkin to a decision and possibly shock the world.

SBR’s pick — Ryota Murata (4.50). We are getting Manny Pacquiao versus Jeff Horn vibes here. Pacquiao put a whooping on Horn and nearly finished him, but Horn's persistence and the home crowd's cheers swayed the judges. Something similar could happen here. And there is no rush to bet on Murata as his line may keep climbing closer to fight time.

Alternative Pick: Fight Does Not Go To Judges

Alternatively, if you're insistent on betting Golovkin's side, find a prop bet for him to win by knockout or for this one to not go to decision. The best sports betting sites in Canada will offer prop bets closer to the fight. Both Golovkin and Murata hit hard and can cause a stoppage here even if Golovkin has shown to have an iron chin and Murata has never been finished. There is a first time for everything. SBR’s pick — Fight Does Not Go To Judges (TBD).
