2018 Major League Soccer Playoffs

2018 Major League Soccer Playoffs
Decision day eliminated the remaining hopefuls from the 2018 MLS Playoffs, which begin on Halloween with the always-tricky knockout round. Toronto FC will not defend their championship this year after a disappointing regular season marked by injury and inconsistency. Instead, sophomore franchise Atlanta United appear primed to challenge for the 2018 MLS Cup against top contenders like the New York Red Bulls, Seattle Sounders and Sporting KC.

MLS Playoffs 2018

The 2018 MLS Playoffs will not include last year’s Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup winner, Toronto FC. Instead, Seattle, Atlanta and the New York Red Bulls appear to be the best picks to win a championship, according to most sports betting sites.

MLS Knockout Round

Road victories tend to be rare in the MLS, including the knock out round of the playoffs. Predicting underdog victories tend to be difficult, especially when the home team dominates their own pitch.

New York City FC (-130) vs Philadelphia Union (+300)

The Philadelphia Union face an uphill battle against a quality NYC FC side that lost only a single game at home this season. The Union lost two in a row to back into the playoffs, including a 3-1 loss to NYC FC at Yankee Stadium. A defeat for New York would be a shocking result.

FC Dallas (-140) vs Portland Timbers (+330)

Portland owns an underwhelming road record, especially in Dallas, with a 1-6-5 record at Toyota Stadium. The Timbers only victory on Dallas FC soil took place in 2014. Dallas were upset by Colorado on decision day to force the Texas-based team into the knock out round. Portland will enter this match well rested, but Dallas FC should be able to win at home on the strength of a superior defense.

D.C. United (+110) vs Columbus Crew SC (+230)

D.C. United enter the post season as one of the better betting values in the MLS. Wayne Rooney genuinely inspires this side, making them a dangerous underdog despite a litany of defensive injuries. Columbus have the misfortune of attempting to defeat the second-best home team in the league – D.C. dropped only a pair of games in the U.S. capitol, with an outstanding payout of +110 in the knock out round.

LAFC (-190) vs Real Salt Lake (+460)

The MLS wants Real Salt Lake out of the playoffs as soon as possible. RSL pushed the Los Angeles Galaxy out of the post season, depriving soccer fans of the Battle of Los Angeles, featuring Zlatan Ibrahimović. Similar to FC Dallas, LAFC were a single point away from a bye, leaps and bounds ahead of RSL. Expect a comfortable victory for Los Angeles.

MLS Conference Semis – Bye Qualifiers

NY Red Bulls

The Supporters’ Shield winners dominated the MLS throughout the regular season, edging Atlanta United FC by two points for top spot in the eastern conference. None of the potential conference semis matchups should pose a threat against the Red Bulls, who own the best home record and goal differential in 2018.

Kaku - MLS Playoffs

Atlanta United

Atlanta nearly won the Supporters’ Shield in their second year, riding a deep club into a knock out bye. New York City FC will legitimately challenge Atlanta United, but striker Josef Martinez has proven impossible to stop this season. Atlanta will be co-favorites alongside the Red Bulls for the 2018 MLS playoffs.

Sporting KC

Kansas City showed considerable resilience throughout the regular season, emerging on top of an extremely competitive western conference. Only a single club – Real Salt Lake – doesn’t have much of a shot at advancing to the western conference finals. As such, Sporting Kansas City won’t feature longer odds compared to eastern conference leaders.

Seattle Sounders

The Seattle Sounders have emerged as a bulletproof side over the past few years, consistently rising to meet all challengers. Seattle ran into an historically great Toronto FC club, preventing the Sounders from winning their second consecutive MLS Cup. The Sounders should be considered as the top dark horse to rise in the west.
