East Division Finals Bye
Now that the CFL no longer features two franchises with a “rough rider” nickname, pro pigskin in Ottawa has returned to the heyday of the original Rough Riders. The Redblacks lifted the Grey Cup in 2016, ending Ottawa’s four-decade championship drought.
A rough 2017 campaign for the Redblacks resulted in a narrow playoff qualification followed by a quick exit from Grey Cup contention. In 2018, Ottawa returned to the top of the east, securing a vital eastern bye. The Redblacks 6-2 division record helped them secure first place without a fuss.
Ottawa has an easier path to the Grey Cup than any other club – instead of facing the Riders or the Bombers, the Redblacks will clash against the worst team in the playoffs or the B.C. Lions, who stumble into the post season with a .500 record.
West Division Finals Bye
Calgary outpaced Saskatchewan to secure a bye in the west, by far the most competitive of the two divisions. The Stampeders ran all over the east en route to the top, with all their losses at the hands of western rivals.
Despite Calgary’s 7-2 home record, the Blue Bombers or the Roughriders will still provide a challenge for the Stamps.
Owners of the stingiest defense and the second most productive offense in the CFL, the Stamps earned a differential of 8.8 points per game, easily the best in the league. The irony behind an excellent regular season involves a tougher western finals matchup compared to the east. Despite Calgary’s 7-2 home record, the Blue Bombers or the Roughriders will still provide a challenge for the Stamps.
Nonetheless, Calgary remains strong favorites to take home their eighth Grey Cup, aiming to reverse consecutive finals losses against the Argos and the Redblacks over the last two years.
B.C. Lions at Hamilton Tiger-Cats
The Lions enter the playoffs with a two-game losing streak while the Tiger-Cats earned home advantage by finishing the season with three losses in a row. These lucky losers face an easier path to the Grey Cup than the Stampeders, Blue Bombers and Roughriders, all of whom played superior football throughout the regular campaign. Hamilton should have the inside edge on an eastern semi win due to home advantage.
Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders
Saskatchewan was close to avoiding a western semi-final clash during an excellent regular season campaign. Instead, they settle for home advantage against Winnipeg to determine the club that clashes with the Stamps in the western finals. Saskatchewan rides or dies with their defense, which has the capability of shutting down Winnipeg’s league-best offense. Keep an eye on Riders starting QB Zach Collaros – Saskatchewan will be a superb dark horse pick to win the Grey Cup if he returns to health.
