2018 American League Pennant Outright Odds, Prediction

2018 American League Pennant Outright Odds, Prediction

Houston Astros (+275)

The rich get richer. This the case for the defending World Series champion Houston Astros, who enter the 2018 MLB season as +275 favourites to win the American League pennant for the second straight year. The club, which won 101 games a year ago en route to the franchise’s first championship, acquired Gerrit Cole in the off-season to strengthen what is already a lethal starting rotation that includes Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel. Add to that Verlander playing a full year with the Astros, Houston is once again position to challenge for a World Series crown. Who can forget about Jose Altuve? The reigning AL most valuable player is sure to hit over .300 once again.

New York Yankees (+325)

The Bronx Bombers slugged their way to success in 2017, most notably outfielder Aaron Judge, who led the American League with 52 home runs a season ago. Judge now has a bash brother next to him in the batting order with the addition of Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins. The two power hitters can cause a lot of damage for the Yankees, who will be looking to improve on its 91-71 record from 2017. The Yankees were second in the AL East in run differential at +198 and second in the AL in runs scored. With a respectable pitching staff, watch for the Yankees to challenge for the AL Pennant outright.

Cleveland Indians (+350)

Two years ago, the Cleveland Indians were all in as the club fell one win short of capturing their first World Series in more than 50 years. That championship window remains open with a lineup that features some of the best hitters in the big leagues. The Tribe boast one of the best batting orders that features Francisco Lindor at lead-off, Jason Kipnis at No. 2, Jose Ramirez batting third and Edwin Encarnacion hitting cleanup. The Indians were the best team in the American League in 2017, posting a record of 102-60 with a dominating run differential of +254. With a +350 line, many bettors will be backing the Tribe to win the AL in 2018.

Boston Red Sox (+550)

A new coach and a fresh start will be in store for the Boston Red Sox, who will be looking to win their first AL crown in five years. Alex Cora, who helped the Astros capture the World Series in 2017, takes over on the bench for the Red Sox. Following a 93-69 season, the Red Sox are primed to make a run in the AL in 2018. The addition of slugger J.D. Martinez makes a huge difference for a Boston team that lacked home runs a year ago. With Boston’s top four hitters of Mookie Betts, Andrew Benintendi, Hanley Ramirez and Martinez, the Red Sox will be in contention for an AL crown and World Series title

Los Angeles Angels (+1200)

If there was one team in the AL that was active in the winter, it was the Los Angeles Angels. The club, which hasn’t won a playoff game since 2009, added key pieces to the lineup including second baseman Ian Kinsler and shortstop Zack Cozart. An injury to Mike Trout last season hurt the Angels, who finished 80-82 and second in the AL West. However, the top of the order features Trout, Justin Upton and Albert Pujols, making the Angels potentially one of the best offensive teams in the AL heading into the 2018 campaign. The question will be, can the Angels’ pitching staff — in particular, an average starting rotation — be strong enough to carry the club deep into the playoffs?

Toronto Blue Jays (+1500)

If you’re looking for a sleeper, look no further than the Toronto Blue Jays, who just two years ago were among the World Series favourites. The batting order may not be as scary as it once was with Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista no longer in the lineup, but the Blue Jays have one of the best starting rotations in the major leagues. Marcus Stroman, J.A. Happ, Marco Estrada and Aaron Sanchez give the Jays depth on the mound and the club will rely on their strong arms to make a run and possibly win the AL pennant by sneaking into the playoffs. The Jays finished 76-86 last season and at +1500, it’s not a bad idea to take a chance on the club.
