2018-19 NHL Outrights

2018-19 NHL Outrights
An unprecedented Stanley Cup finals in 2018 witnessed the first ever championship for the Washington Capitals, who defeated the Vegas Golden Knights expansion club. The modern NHL features greater parity than ever, with as many as ten clubs capable of challenging for a Stanley Cup. This guide to NHL outrights in 2018-19 outlines odds and analysis for all teams in the eastern and western conference.

Stanley Cup Favorites In 2019

Toronto Maple Leafs +700

aToronto possesses the most powerful attack after adding John Tavares in the offseason, elevating the Maple Leafs to favorites in NHL futures odds, according to early season lines available from sportsbooks like Bodog Canada. Time will tell if their defense will hold up over a long season.

Tampa Bay Lightning +850

The Maple Leafs may be the popular pick, but Tampa Bay features a deeper lineup. Victor Hedman gives the Lightning a stud defenseman that the Leafs simply don’t have on their roster. Tampa Bay’s more likely to win the east than the Leafs, providing great wagering value.

Winnipeg Jets +850

Most pundits believe that the Winnipeg Jets will leverage experience earned during their 2018 western finals run into a Stanley Cup appearance this season. This club’s fast, skilled, big and motivated. Consider Winnipeg the best bet to win the west.

Nashville Predators +1000

Nashville’s the same great team that won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2018 and made the Stanley Cup Finals in 2017. The Predators need improved playoff performance from Pekka Rinne to make the most out of the Predators elite depth.

Stanley Cup 2019 Top Contenders

Boston Bruins +1100

Boston features one of the best lines in the NHL, with Bergeron, Pasternak and Marchand dominating most clubs. An unproven defensive corps and poor playoff performances from Tukka Rask will sink the Bruins if this trend repeats in the 2019 post season.

San Jose Sharks +1100

Adding Erik Karlsson after signing Evander Kane should boost this club into a fight for the Pacific Division title with the Golden Knights. The Sharks have the best defensive depth in the league and experienced forwards. A solid season from goalie Martin Jones will ensure a long playoff run for San Jose.

Pittsburgh Penguins +1200

Crosby and Malkin still form one of the best duos down the middle. Kris Letang enters the season fully healthy and Phil Kessel’s an ironman sniper. The Penguins roll three scoring lines and a deep defense, while Matt Murray already has two rings. Pittsburgh should be considered the favorite to win the cup in 2019

Washington Capitals +1400

The Capitals no longer operate under the pressure of unfulfilled promise, winning the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 2018. All the most important contributors returned, except for coach Berry Trotz. Underestimate Ovechkin and the Capitals at your own peril.

Vegas Golden Knights +1500

Vegas offers terrific value at +1500 after adding Paul Stastny and Max Pacioretty over the offseason. The best expansion team in modern sports history will be better in 2018-19, just as deep as Nashville, San Jose and Winnipeg. Expect another big season in Vegas.

NHL Stanley Cup Longshots

St. Louis Blues +2000

A candidate to underperform this season, St. Louis needs Jake Allen to find consistency if they wish to return to the playoffs.

Dallas Stars +2600

Dallas will be an intriguing dark horse to win the Stanley Cup in a competitive western conference. The Stars have a dangerous attack, but Ben Bishop needs to display Vezina form for Dallas to win.

Columbus Blue Jackets +2600

Missing Seth Jones for the beginning of the season isn’t what the Blue Jackets want to deal with after a disappointing first-round playoff exit. Columbus needs a healthy Jones and another sniper to compete in the east.

Philadelphia Flyers +2600

Philly decided to stick with the tandem of Brian Elliot and Michal Neuvirth in net. Neither of these goalies are proven winners, likely dooming the Flyers to an early exit.

Los Angeles Kings +2800

A terrific campaign from Kopitar, Quick and Doughty earned the Kings a first round sweep from Vegas. Adding Kovalchuk doesn’t transform Los Angeles into a cup contender.

Anaheim Ducks +2800

Anaheim tends to be one of the toughest teams to play against in the post season. Their punishing physical style and strong goaltending makes them great dark horses to surprise the western conference.

Edmonton Oilers +3000

The Oilers could squeeze into the last wild card spot because of McDavid, but the team appears to have issues with defensive depth. If youngsters like Klefbom, Puljujärvi and Yamamoto learn to produce consistently, Edmonton could turn into a very dangerous club.

Calgary Flames +3300

If Calgary’s defense gels and the forward crew begins to produce, the Flames could ride a great year from goalie Mike Smith into a playoff appearance. Don’t expect a cup, unless a third star emerges on offense.

Minnesota Wild +3500

Key Wild forwards begin to enter the twilight of their careers, which could further reduce scoring for this defensive-oriented club. Minnesota doesn’t have the firepower to compete against the western elite.

Chicago Blackhawks +4000

Corey Crawford may not be ready to return at a high level because of concussion issues. Chicago missed the playoffs last year as stars like Toews, Keith and Seabrook age. Don’t expect a return to the playoffs in a stacked Central Division.

New Jersey Devils +4000

Taylor Hall needs to have another MVP campaign for the Devils to make the post season. Otherwise, New Jersey will not be able to compete in a tough Metro Division.

Colorado Avalanche +4000

Colorado’s impressive run to the playoffs shows promise for this franchise. A first round playoff win isn’t out of the question, but they’re a year or two away from cup contention.

Florida Panthers +4500

Relying on an aging and injury prone Luongo may be the undoing of the Panthers, who feature superb forwards and an excellent top defensive pairing. Roberto needs to return to vintage form for this team to make the playoffs.
