2017 NHL Playoff Picks: Montreal Canadiens vs. NY Rangers Series

2017 NHL Playoff Picks: Montreal Canadiens vs. NY Rangers Series

Montreal vs NY Rangers NHL Playoff 2017

My Team's Next MatchMontreal Canadiens

New York and Montreal met three times during the regular season and the Habs took all three. In a series that will be billed as a battle between two great goalies, two of the three regular season matchups didn't play out like that as Montreal won 5-4 and 4-1. The Rangers struggled to score goals down the stretch and if they can't find a way to consistently beat Carey Price... [+]

This series may not be that long.

The Rangers torched the nets for the first half of the season and that torrid start allowed them to finish 4th in the league with 3.09 goals per game. They only reached that number once though against Montreal and with Lundqvist not having his best season by any means, it will be on the back of the Rangers attack that we see them in the second round.

Montreal's strength in this series will be their defence, but like New York, the Habs are going to need more production from their 2nd and 3rd line guys. Max Pacioretty and Carey Price can only do so much for this team, so guys like Paul Byron, Andrew Shaw, and even Tomas Plekanec (28 pts in 72 games) are going to have to do their part. Sweeping the Rangers in the season series is a nice confidence boost from the get-go, but a Game 1 loss would kill that in a hurry.

Montreal vs New York Game 5 Prediction

Preview: Taking the total in Game 4 of this series didn't work out all that well, although we were one Montreal shot away from earning at least a push on that play and the Habs definitely had their chances. Now the series returns to Montreal for Game 5 in an ultimate swing game with the series tied 2-2. Both sides will be doing everything they can to get that critical 3-2 series lead and be one win away from the next round.

Prediction: MONTREAL CANADIENS ML (-155) at Sports Interaction.

Home ice has not been a crucial factor in this series so far with each team going 1-1 SU in their own building, but with the series nearing it's end, expect that to change a little bit.

The Habs were a little complacent early in Game 4 being up 2-1 in the series and it ultimately cost them as they weren't able to get more then one shot by Lundqvist.

With the home crowd behind them tonight, expect Montreal to be the ones to come out of the gate flying and flip that pressure back on the Rangers. We've already seen Carey Price be more then capable and up to the task of shutting the door late when Montreal is tied/leading in the Habs two victories this series and tonight should be more of the same.

Montreal vs New York Game 6 Prediction

Preview: The Montreal Canadiens blew their chance to go up 3-2 in this series on at home when they fell in OT to the Rangers, and the Habs looked quite tenative overall after storming out to a 2-1 lead in the 1st period. Montreal wouldn't score again as they just couldn't get another puck by Henrik Lundqvist, and now they find their backs against the wall trying to win in New York again. This series has been tight the entire way and with tonight's line near the pick'em range, it would be a shame this series doesn't go the distance.

Prediction: MONTREAL CANADIENS ML (-115) at Sports Interaction.

Montreal hasn't lost three games in a row since mid-February, and for them to relive a streak like that now would be heartbreaking for this team. Offensively they've had their chances the past two games, but one tough bounce here and there have put them on the short end of the stick. With everything on the line for them tonight and the opportunity to try and clinch this series back at home in Game 7, expect Montreal to come out with a similar gameplan to the one they had for Game 3 where they played sound defensive hockey, took advantage of their counter-attack opportunities, and cash in a few times. The pressure is on New York to close it out tonight as they do not want to go back to Montreal for a Game 7 and pressure definitely can do some funny things to teams during the playoffs.

NHL Playoff Picks Tonight

Montreal is the only Canadian team trying to save their season tonight, but the Edmonton Oilers are also in action as they'll try to close out the Sharks in San Jose. Edmonton's last game in the Shark Tank was disastrous and Oilers fans hope the team has completely forgotten about that 7-0 loss as they re-enter that building. You can see who we like in Game 6 of that series here
