2017 NHL Playoff Picks: Edmonton Oilers vs San Jose Sharks Series

Edmonton vs San Jose 2017 NHL Playoff 2017

    My Team's Next MatchEdmonton Oilers

The city of Edmonton couldn't be more ecstatic to see their Oilers back playing some meaningful hockey, and Connor McDavid and company didn't exactly just sneak their way into the playoffs. It may be the Oilers first appearance in the playoffs in 10 years, but there are actually some lofty expectations for them as the organization continues its climb back towards relevance. [+]

They get the defending Western Conference champions in Round 1 and while San Jose is much older and a little banged up, you'd better believe that if they are going down, they won't go down without a fight. San Jose has a decided edge in playoff experience on their bench and the skill they have up-and-down their lineup is among the league's best.

But in a matchup like this, San Jose's age and lack of speed will play a pivotal role in how much success the Sharks have. If San Jose can muck up the game and negate much of Edmonton's speed advantage, get timely scoring, and withstand the early noise and charge on the road, there is no reason to really call a San Jose win in this series "an upset."

The Oilers enter the matchup as -175 favorites to advance and that's a lot to ask for a team that's made up of a core of young guys making their NHL playoff debut. Connor McDavid is on the fast track to becoming the face of the NHL and his skill and speed will cause headaches for San Jose all series long. We all know the Oilers can score, but if they get strong defensive play while in their own end and from the defensive back line in general, Edmonton should be able to live up to those expectations at least for one round.

Edmonton vs San Jose Game 5 Prediction

The Game: Game 4 was a game that the Edmonton Oilers would quickly like to forget as they were taken behind the woodshed and beaten badly 7-0. It was the most dominant performance we've seen by any team so far in these playoffs as the Sharks really showed their talent and experience in coming to play in a game they absolutely had to have. Now the scene shifts back to Edmonton with the series tied 2-2 and the winner of tonight's game will be in the driver's seat to clinch the series in Game 6 and move on to face the Anaheim Ducks in the next round.

Prediction: OVER 5 GOALS (+105) at Sports Interaction

Cashing this 'over' play in Game 4 was relatively easy thanks to the Sharks dominance, but with one team getting shutout in each of the past three games, I do believe that we see both teams get on the scoreboard multiple times tonight. You can't understate how important winning Game 5 is in a 2-2 series and both sides will do their best to be aggressive and get the puck to the back of the net. San Jose is on a 4-0-1 O/U run against a team that gave up 5+ in their last outing, and with the home crowd supporting Edmonton to rebound, a 2-2 game by the start of the 3rd period would have this play free-rolling the rest of the way.

Edmonton vs San Jose Game 6 Prediction

The Game: The Oilers showed in Game 5 tha they were definitely able to put the Game 4 debacle behind them as they fought back from a 3-1 2nd period San Jose lead to force OT late and eventually win the game. This young Edmonton team now heads back to the scene of that 7-0 loss to try and close out a series against the defending Western Conference Champions and they'll likely experience first hand how tough getting that 4th win of a series acutally can be.

Prediction: EDMONTON OILERS ML (+120) at Sports Interaction

After two straight winners on the total in this series, it's back to the side tonight as Edmonton steps up and exercises those Game 4 demons tonight. Yes, closing out a series in this league is very tough, but it's not like Edmonton doesn't have guys with plenty of playoff experience to lean on (Lucic, Maroon, etc) and they'll be counted on to show up big tonight. Considering Edmonton leads this series 3-2 and Connor McDavid has yet to really light up the scoresheet shows just how deep this team is, but it will their big name scorers that will want to produce in the clincher and with their speed and skill they should be able to get by a beat up, tired, and older Sharks team.

    NHL Playoff Picks Tonight

The first round of the 2017 NHL Playoffs is almost at it's end and that means that by this time next week we will be dissecting Game 1's and 2's of some very good second round matchups around the league. How many Canadian teams that will still be alive remains to be seen, but the Oilers have a great opportunity to be the first to punch their ticket in that regard tonight.
