2017-18 Vezina Trophy Winner Odds, Prediction
Odds are courtesy of Bodog.eu.
Andrei Vasilevskiy (-350)
The Tampa Bay Lightning netminder has been the frontrunner for the Vezina Trophy all season long. Vasilevskiy leads all NHL goalies with 42 victories while also posting a goals-against average of 2.60. The Russian goaltender also has a .921 save percentage with 7 shutouts through 60 games this season. Vasilevskiy is on pace to double his win total from a year ago when he finished with 23 victories in the Tampa Bay crease. The Lightning wouldn’t be the same team without Vasilevskiy in the net, which makes his value and chances of winning the Vezina Trophy that much greater. The problem is, at -350, it’s not as enticing for bettors as other potential candidates.
Pekka Rinne (+400)
The veteran goalie turned the clock back with the Nashville Predators this season. While many wrote Pekka Rinne off, the 35-year-old proved there’s still a lot left in the tank. Oddsmakers have pegged Rinne at +400 to win the Vezina after winning 40 games for the third time in his career. Playing fewer games than Vasilevskiy, Rinne held a goals-against average of 2.26 and a league-best .929 save percentage. Rinne does have the luxury of having the best defensive team in front of him, but credit should still be given to the Finnish goalie, who is an enticing +400 favourite to win the Vezina.
Connor Hellebuyck (+550)
Where would the Winnipeg Jets be without Connor Hellebuyck? The American goaltender ranks among the best in the game and it has showed on the stats line. Hellebuyck is on pace to record his first 40-win season and sits third in goals-against average at 2.34 in 61 starts. Hellebuyck faces a lot of rubber, stopping 1711 of 1851 shots this season with the Jets. Hellebuyck would become the first American goalie to win the Vezina since Tim Thomas captured the award in 2011. Oddsmakers have Hellebuyck at +550 to win the Vezina and bettors have already started putting their money down on the Jets netminder.
Tuukka Rask (+700)
The Vezina Trophy went to Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask in 2014 and the Stanley Cup champion is in the running to collect his second. Rask battled through injuries in 2017-18, but still managed to post another 30-win campaign, while also maintaining a remarkable 2.34 GAA and .917 save percentage. Bodog has Rask pegged as a +700 longshot to win the Vezina and while it is unlikely, if the Bruins make a deep run into the post-season and win the Stanley Cup, don’t be surprised to hear Rask’s name called when the award is presented in Las Vegas later this summer.
Vezina Trophy Prediction: Pekka Rinne (+400)
