Best NHL Western Conference Betting Tips

The first thing bettors should know is that hockey is obviously a lower scoring game than football or basketball. This means betting on the over/under of any given game is a bit tougher than other sports. Remember to always look at the goalie match-up first. 

As mentioned above, most sports fans in Canada are a hockey fans. Just about everyone will have an theory on who you should be putting your money on. But, don’t forget that bettors help dictate the lines and the odds. So doing the opposite of what all the other fans are betting on will often help you win some big money. 

Some bettors follow what’s called the zig zag theory when they bet on hockey. Basically, it means you bet on a team that just lost, because they are due to bounce back for a win. Be careful with this mentality. Zig zagging doesn’t really apply to hot or cold teams that are likely to go on a big streak. It is an OK strategy when two average and evenly matched teams are squaring off. It also doesn’t factor in things like hot goaltenders or injuries that may be causing the losses. 

You should also remember that home ice advantage is really only a statistically big deal for the NHL’s best teams. The rest of the league only wins a bit more than half of their home games. Betting on the home team is not quite as safe as it would be in the NFL or the NBA.
