Minnesota vs Arizona: Wild and Coyotes NHL Duel in the Desert
Arizona Coyotes: Strong start in the desert real or a mirage?
Playing in the powerful Western Conference, both of these teams can go unnoticed during the Stanley Cup preseason crystal ball gazing. This is especially true with the Coyotes as Arizona hasn’t posted a winning record since their magical playoff run during the 2011-12 NHL season. Displaying the form he possessed while guiding the Coyotes to the Western Conference Finals four years ago, goaltender Mike Smith has shined in net during his first three starts. Smith has stopped 104 of the 106 shots he’s faced and Arizona has outscored their opponents by a 10-2 margin. Their schedule hasn’t been a cupcake as the ‘Yotes sandwiched road wins over the Kings (4-1) and Ducks (4-0) with a 2-1 win at home against the Penguins.
Minnesota Wild: Open their NHL season with a pair of high scoring one-goal victories
Big things are expected in the Land of a Thousand Lakes this year as Minnesota was tied with the Blues as third chalk (+550) to win the ultra-competitive Western Conference back in the preseason. Entering this contest, following almost four days off, Minnesota has played in two high scoring contests to begin their season. The Wild opened on the road with a 5-4 win over the Rockies in Colorado and then returned home to post a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues last Saturday. The numbers during their first two matches are a little strange as the Wild take pride in playing “big” with their defense. G Devan Dubnyk is expected to start tonight and has allowed six goals on the 55 shots he has faced in his first two outings
Minnesota vs Arizona NHL Prediction: The Coyotes solid defense carries over to special teams as Arizona has not allowed a goal during eleven shorthanded situations. Taking that many penalties is however playing with fire. The powerplay could use some work as the Coyotes have only scored once during 13 man-advantage situations. Minnesota is two for five on the powerplay and on their penalty kill. The Coyotes playing on back-to-back nights, with travel, is a slight concern here.
