Athletics vs Astros: Oakland Looks to Pad MLB Best Overall Record
All-Star pitcher Scott Kazmir gets the call for Oakland
Thanks to a sparkling first half, where he went 11-3 with a miniscule 2.38 ERA over 19 outings, Athletics ace RHP Scott Kazmir returned to the All-Star game this year – for the first time since 2008. Kazmir has allowed two runs or less in 13 of his starts and Oakland is 2-0 in his two games versus Houston this season. Despite a .253 team batting average, Oakland is second behind the LA Angels with 485 runs scored over 98 contests.
Houston Astros: Close to regaining top perch as strikeout leaders
It’s been another long year in Houston. It took them over half the season to get there but the Astros (41-58) are just three K’s away from the MLB strikeout lead with 878. It’s a perch the ‘Stros are familiar with as they led that category with a staggering 1535 K’s last season. Brett Oberholtzer (2-7 ERA 4.50) gets the start for Houston and he was lit up for six runs in 3 2/3 innings when he faced Kazmir and the A’s on April 24, 2014.
