Black Onyx a late Derby scratch – 19 horse field is set
There has already been some Derby drama, with the late scratch of Black Onyx. Slated to break from inside post position #1, the Kelly Breen-trained winner of the Spiral Stakes woke up sore on Friday morning, and x-rays revealed an small bone chip in his ankle. Although Black Onyx had trained well during the week, Breen noticed the horse limping after Friday morning workouts. Ridden by three-time Derby winner Calvin Borel, Revolutionary comes to Kentucky having won three straight – including one on a wet track. He hasn’t faced the best competition, but his victory in the Louisiana Derby featured a six-wide move on the turn before running down Derby contender Mylute. With a 12-1 line, Normandy Invasion is also getting some attention. Although beaten by Derby second-choice Verrazano in the Wood, he was closing fast and could be helped by the extra distance.
