139th Kentucky Derby: Field Is Set For The Run For The Roses

Black Onyx a late Derby scratch – 19 horse field is set

There has already been some Derby drama, with the late scratch of Black Onyx. Slated to break from inside post position #1, the Kelly Breen-trained winner of the Spiral Stakes woke up sore on Friday morning, and x-rays revealed an small bone chip in his ankle. Although Black Onyx had trained well during the week, Breen noticed the horse limping after Friday morning workouts. Being as the scratch came two hours after the cut off for Also Eligible horses to draw in – the Kentucky Derby is now down to a rare 19 horse field at the gate.

Wet track no problem for top Derby contender Revolutionary

For those still in the Triple Crown chase, 10-1 Revolutionary is starting to draw interest as a possible horse to beat. Ridden by three-time Derby winner Calvin Borel, Revolutionary comes to Kentucky having won three straight – including one on a wet track. He hasn’t faced the best competition, but his victory in the Louisiana Derby featured a six-wide move on the turn before running down Derby contender Mylute. With a 12-1 line, Normandy Invasion is also getting some attention. Although beaten by Derby second-choice Verrazano in the Wood, he was closing fast and could be helped by the extra distance.
